  • Tachard's last appearance in Ayutthaya, 1699

    Open Access•Michael Smithies•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Asiatic…•2002

The Jesuit Guy Tachard (1648–1712) first came to Siam with the Chaumont-Choisy embassy of 1685 as one of six Jesuits destined for missionary work in China. The group was headed by Fr de Fontaney (1643–1710). The decision of the Abbé de Choisy (1644–1724), who held the post of coadjutant ambassador, to withdraw from the diplomatic scene and effect a retreat prior to his ordination as a priest in Lopburi on 10 December 1685 enabled Tachard to repla…

  • Cambodian Architecture, Eighth to Thirteenth Centuries

Jacques Dumarçay, Pascal Royère et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Cambodian Architecture, Eighth to…•2001

The first part of this study covers the technical, economic and site constraints of the famous ancient Khmer monuments, as well as the architectural concepts and decoration of the structures. It becomes clear that the realization of the plans was occasionally thwarted by technical limitations. The second part considers the buildings proper, focusing first on pre-Angkorean architecture, and the structures at Roluos. It then considers in turn the i…

  • Les gouverneurs français de Phuket, Bangkok et Mergui au XVIIe siècle

    Michael Smithies•ARTICLE•Aséanie•2001

It is not generally realized that the Siamese settlements of Phuket, Bangkok, and Mergui all had French governors in the period 1682-1688 ; in all three cases they had been preceded by other foreigners, respectively Indian, Turkish and Portuguese, and English. The article details the careers and ends of the different governors, whose tenure of office was cut short soon after Petracha's coup d'état in May 1688. Only two of the governors, who both …

  • Le lion de Lopburi

    Michael Smithies•ARTICLE•Aséanie•1999

King Narai of Siam made a point of sending exotic animals to Louis XIV all of which seem to have died en route if they were not off-loaded from overheavy boats in Ayutthaya, and his ambassadors visited the new royal menagerie at Versailles during their stay in France in 1686. Phra Narai received from the French Indies Company in 1684 a recycled gift of a lion, which was added to his menagerie in Lopburi ; its ressemblance to the Marshal of Turenn…

A number of Frenchman stayed behind in Siam in the wake of the Chaumont-Choisy embassy of 1685. The best known are the Chevalier de Forbin and the engineer La Mare: Forbin was appointed governor of Bangkok, admiral and general of the King of Siam's armies, and La Mare was to produce numerous plans, sometimes implemented, of Vaubanesque fortifications at various places including Bangkok, Mergui, Songkhla, and Phatthalung

  • The Summary

    Open Access•Michael Smithies•ARTICLE•World Englishes•1981

In summarizing a passage, the writer has to select the main points and to some extent reformulate them in coherent sentences. That sounds simple enough, but in practice it is far more difficult, particularly when dealing with tautly-written technical prose. Yet the ability to select facts or arguments and rank them in order of importance is one of the hallmarks of an educated person, if by that is understood a manipulator rather than a regurgitat…
