George Padmore and decolonization from below: Pan-Africanism, the cold war, and the end of empire
When C.L.R. James met George Padmore in London in the 1930s he was surprised to discover that this well-known anti-imperialist was his Trinidadian friend Malcolm Nurse (he had assumed the name Geor

Cities of Alexander the Great
The cities founded by Alexander the Great are an essential part of his overall achievements. The problems concerning them, however, are many - and some incapable of solution. This book is the first to unravel thoroughly the tradition, explaining how it originated in a tendentious political pamphlet of the third century BC, which in turn originated in Ptolemaic Alexandria in the context of the development of the earliest version of the Alexander R…

British West Indians in Haiti in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries
Using primarily Foreign Office records, this article examines the hitherto‐ignored West Indian immigrant community in Haiti in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It discusses their economic and political activities as well as their relations with the host society. It argues that in a black republic the successes or failures of these immigrants had less to do with the colour of their skins than with the political and economic probl…

The Musical Mode: "Putting on "The Red Shoes
The musical has not died with the wave of nostalgic Gene Kelly/Fred Astaire tributes, with big budget catastrophes like The Wiz, with Bob Fosse, John Travolta, electronic music, and commercial rock video editing; it is the Hollywood musical, or that generic tradition defined and conventionalized in Hollywood during the golden age of the studio era, that may not be recoverable. The musical itself has as many possibilities now as it did at the onse…

The Criminal Courts in Scotland Under Pressure 1
The steady increase in crime places very real strains upon the administration of justice in our courts today — the trend for increasing crime statistics over the last 40 years confirms this. Despite expansions in the courts, decisions are being taken not to prosecute cases which in former days would have been prosecuted. However it is in the public interest that justice should not be long delayed. Steps taken to relieve this pressure are multifac…

Generally speaking, there is nothing to be said in favour of publishing an article on a text one is admittedly unable to under-stand. But in this case it has seemed advisable to start a discussion. I am therefore grateful to my friend P. Fraser for having consented to communicate his thoughts on the matter in an appen…

III. Unionism and Tariff Reform: The Crisis of 1906
The bitter hostility with which Joseph Chamberlain was pursued by the sections of the Unionist party opposed to his policy of tariff reform, even after he resigned from Balfour's cabinet in September 1903 to conduct his campaign untrammelled by office, is a curious aspect of Unionist history. The party had seen its defeat clearly foreshadowed in a series of catastrophic by-elections, and yet it persisted in fighting its own internal fiscal battle…

Lord Beaverbrook's Fabrications in Politicians and the War , 1914–1916
In spite of occasional protests Lord Beaverbrook's narrative of British domestic politics during the first world war seems to retain the authority of a primary source. This is particularly true of the passages in Politicians and the war, 1914–1916 which cover the events in which he, then Sir Max Aitken, claimed to have taken an influential part. Mr A. J. P.
