Effective community-engaged research is critical for designing and testing solutions to decrease the 10-year life expectancy gap between Black and non-Black residents of Chicago, Illinois. In community listening sessions, the Chicago Chronic Conditions Engagement Network found that community members’ highest priority health issues were social determinants of health and that there is a strong mistrust of research. Conversations with leaders of com…
Religious and Spiritual Experiences, Discrimination, and Stress Among Midlife Women in the USA
The harmful effects of perceived discrimination for physical and mental health are well documented. Evidence identifies how dimensions of religious/spiritual (R/S) involvement may reduce these harmful effects. This study examined how R/S experiences are associated with the effects of discrimination on perceived stress. With data from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), we examined the offsetting and buffering effects of daily sp…

Pre- and Early Peri-menopausal Physical Function and Risk of Cardiovascular Events
Participants were N = 2950 pre-/early peri-menopausal women (median age 46, (25th-75th percentile: 43-48 years). Physical function was assessed at baseline using the Physical Function subscale of the SF-36 and scores were trichotomized (no, some, or substantial limitations). Clinical CVD events were ascertained at annual/biennial clinical assessments through the 15th follow-up visit. Risk of CVD was determined with Cox proportional hazards models…
Results of Alive
The ALIVE intervention was flexibly adapted by a range of churches; successfully implemented by pastors, deacons, and church leaders; and rigorously evaluated across a range of church settings. Further study of this intervention is warranted given the evidence for potential efficacy and a high level of external validity

Understanding Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Physical Performance in Midlife Women
Addressing issues of poverty, racial inequality, pain, and obesity could reduce some racial/ethnic disparity in functional limitations as women age
Transdisciplinary Cardiovascular and Cancer Health Disparities Training
The Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities program promotes multilevel and multifactorial health equity research and the building of research teams that are transdisciplinary. We summarized 5 areas of scientific training for empowering the next generation of health disparities investigators with research methods and skills that are needed to solve disparities and inequalities in cancer and cardiovascular disease. These areas include…
How well does the body adiposity index capture adiposity change in midlife women
Objectives: The body adiposity index (BAI) is a proposed alternative to the body mass index (BMI) that has shown good cross‐sectional agreement with percent body fat (%BF) in validation studies. The objective of this study was to examine the ability of BAI to track adiposity change over time in a biracial sample of midlife women. Methods: African‐American ( n = 159) and Caucasian ( n = 206) women, aged 42–60 years, at the Chicago site of the Stud…
Depressive Symptoms and Increased Visceral Fat in Middle-Aged Women
Objective: To examine whether depressive symptoms are differentially associated with visceral adipose tissue (VAT), which is more metabolically active and confers greater cardiovascular risk than subcutaneous fat (SAT). Prior research has shown an association between depression and central adiposity. Mechanisms underlying the association between depression and increased cardiovascular risk remain poorly understood. Central adiposity is one potent…
