Do the Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions mark the beginning of the Anthropocene?
Hunting Wildlife in the Tropics and Subtropics
Fa, J. E., S. M. Funk, and R. Nasi. Hunting Wildlife in the Tropics and Subtropics. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge and New York. 2022. (pp. 410) Paperback (ISBN 9781107540347) £39.99. An online version is available free at doi.org/10.1017/9781316338704 under a Creative Commons Open Access license. This is an excellent book and will be enjoyed, despite the negative associations of the topic, by anyone who has worked on hunting and wild meat…
Designing an ecologically representative global network of protected areas requires coordination between countries
People are now impacting the natural environment at an unparalleled scale. The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) warns that up to one million species may be threatened with extinction. Protected areas (PAs) represent a key conservation strategy for addressing human environmental impacts. In 2010 the Parties to the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) agreed to Aichi Target 11. Although th…

Becoming Europe
When I visited the Southeast Asian tropics as an undergraduate in 1973 it seemed as different from my European home as anywhere on Earth could be. The forest was already in retreat, but large contiguous tracts remained virtually intact. Fast-forward 40 years, however, and more than half of the original forest cover of Southeast Asia has gone, more than half of what remains has been logged or otherwise degraded, and the majority, logged or unlogge…
Averting biodiversity collapse in tropical forest protected areas
Seed dispersal by long-tailed macaques
We review here the methods by which long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis fascicularis) process seeds in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Singapore, and the factors that influence this. Feeding observations have revealed that these macaques either destroy seeds in their mouth with their teeth, spit them out whole from the mouth after removing much of the flesh, or else clean the flesh off them at the front of the mouth and then drop them. Absence …
Hills and Streams
Despite centuries of human impact and one the highest population densities on Earth, most of Hong Kong is still rural in character and diverse in terms of flora and fauna. This diversity is threatened, though, by uncontrolled development of previously rural areas. This book aims to contribute to the conservation of the countryside by raising awareness of its value and by providing the scientific basis for its management
Postcanine tooth size and diet in anthropoid primates
The molar tooth size gradient has been investigated in 69 species of anthropoid primates. The major variation was found to be in the relative contributions in the crown areas of the first and third molars (Ml and M3) and the ratio M1/M3 was employed to describe the shape and relative size of the molar row. The contribution of the most distal premolar (P4) to the postcanine area was great er when M3 was relatively smaller. The ratio M1/M3 was inve…
