Gambling soccer – a description of an informal football practice in South African townships
The purpose of this article is to document a popular football practice widespread in South African townships – gambling soccer. It is based on an ethnographic set of in situ observations, interviews, photographs and recordings that were collected during four two-week visits in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Using that documentary basis, the article shows how the activity is usually organized and conducted in the Kayamandi township, a part of the Stel…
Undertaking long-distance running: Thirty years of studies on the sociology of sport in France
This article offers a literature review on long-distance running, i.e., marathon, ultra-long-distance, and trail running, based on French studies on the sociology of sport. The interest of such a synthesis lies, firstly, in its affording a better understanding of the continued craze for those running disciplines that are now major practices on the sports scene. Secondly, in its presenting to English-speaking sports sociologists the premises and t…

Integrating a Popular Sport into the Patrimony in a South African Provincial Town: The Case of Football in Stellenbosch
The awarding of the 2010 World Cup to South Africa was presented as an enormous achievement for South Africans. It was believed that one of the many benefits would be that tourism would be given a community-oriented focus. In the light of this, the Stellenbosch Municipality, situated in the Western Cape, launched the ‘Great Stellenbosch 2010’ project in 2006. As part of the project, the black township of Kayamandi was given a building to promote …

Soccer in a rugby town: Restructuring football in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is a South African town long perceived as a stronghold of Afrikaner culture and rugby; however, soccer is also played there. This essay examines the difficulties met by the Stellenbosch Local Football Association (SLFA) in its attempt to unify the different local soccer leagues inherited from the apartheid period. The recent effort by the South African Football Association (SAFA) to restructure the country’s soccer leagues ahead of t…
