  • Beyond lobbying

    Open Access•Patrick Bernhagen, Ken Kollman et al.•ARTICLE•Interest Groups & Advocacy•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 20

This paper explores the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as an element in a corporation’s political action repertoire. Previous research has studied lobbying and CSR as a distinct means by which corporations seek to manage their non-market environment. Analyzing CSR as a political activity, we argue that corporations engage in CSR for the same reasons that prompt them to engage in lobbying. More specifically, we expect corporations t…

  • Relational identities on EU borderlands

Catherine Wallace, Claire Wallace et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 18

The paper argues that the well-known triadic relationship between kin state, resident state and national minority needs to take into account a fourth dimension: that of European institutions. This is illustrated through a study of relational identities on the EU's Eastern border where the reconfiguration of ethnic relations followed the end of the iron curtain and EU accession. It considers two neighbouring ethnic minorities. One minority is part…

  • Citizenship, Europe and ethnic boundary making among Russian minorities in Latvia and Lithuania

    Open Access•Natalka Patsiurko, Catherine Wallace•ARTICLE•MIGRATION LETTERS•2014

This article uses Andreas Wimmer’s model of ethnic boundary making to examine ethnic boundaries among the Russian-speaking minorities in Lithuania and Latvia, two countries with contrasting integration policies. We argue that the exclusive integration policies of Latvia, particularly with regard to citizenship, result in the ‘hardening’ of ethnic boundaries for Russian-speaking minorities in the country, while the more inclusive policies of Lithu…

  • Nation-State Size, Ethnic Diversity and Economic Performance in the Advanced Capitalist Countries

    Natalka Patsiurko, John L Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•New Political Economy•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 18

This paper examines the proposition that the economic performance of advanced capitalist countries depends on their size and ethnic composition. As such it blends insights from two important literatures in comparative political economy. One is exemplified by the work of Peter Katzenstein, who wrote the classic treatise on the relationship between nation-state size and economic performance. Another is illustrated by the work of Ernest Gellner, who…

  • Measuring cultural diversity

Natalka Patsiurko, John Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2011•Cited by: 28•References: 25

Many claim that national economic success depends upon cultural homogeneity. We collect new time-series data and develop new measures of ethnic, linguistic and religious fractionalization for the OECD countries. We show that cultural diversity may vary by type across countries and over short periods of time. We also show that our measure of ethnic fractionalization is a significant predictor of economic performance in OECD countries despite the f…
