Psychiatric Labelling and the Imputation of Mental Illness by Jurors
Previous research suggests that jurors in defense-of-insanity trials are influenced significantly more by defendent behavior than by professional psychiatric diagnoses. This finding would appear to refute labelling theory's emphasis on societal reaction as equally or more important in the development of a deviant career. These earlier studies of jury decision making, however, were not designed as tests of the labelling perspective and the results…
The Dynamics of Religious Defection among Hutterites

The Death of Hutterite Culture
On aligning actions in simple societies

Structural Tightness and Social Conformity
A discrepancy between our findings and those of J. W. Berry and associates concerning the relative independence/ compliance of subjects from tight and loose societies is noted. It is suggested that methodologically this discrepancy derives from a difference in the two Asch-type testing procedures employed. More importantly, however, the data suggest the need for a conceptual refinement of the tight/loose dimension such that the source of external…

Structural Tightness, Autonomy, and Observability

Structural Tightness and Cross-Cultural Research
Traditional,simple/complex" typologies for categorizing societies have proven inadequate to allow a meaningful ordering and interpretation of data generated by cross-cultural research. Another dimension of social structure is gradually coming into focus to amend this inadequacy, namely structural tightness/looseness. As presently conceived, however, it is not entirely clear what the structural referents of tightness/ looseness are, resulting in s…
Contraceptive Careers
Current research on fertility regulating behaviour is criticized on the grounds that it lacks theoretical coherence and is too preoccupied establishing the factors that predispose individuals toward the practice of contraception without addressing the subjective processes whereby these factors become translated into behavioural events. Proper consideration of this aspect of fertility regulating behaviour requires a more balanced theoretical and m…
The Significance of Significant others
Acquiescence and Conventionality in a Communal Society
An attempt is made to test the hypothesis that the conventional behavior of individuals reared in "folk" societies is attributable to their tendency to acquiesce willingly to the expectations of the group. Utilizing a modified Crutchfield-type group pressure technique, children reared in the conventional, and structurally "tight," Hutterite communities are compared to a group of children from the host society. A sample of Old Colony Mennonite sub…
