An Author without a Nation: Fictional Renderings of Leopoldo Lugones in Argentine Literature
This article examines three novels that use fiction to revise the figure of the Argentine author Leopoldo Lugones: Ricardo Piglia’s Respiración artificial (1980), C. E. Feiling’s Un poeta nacional (1993), and César Aira’s Lugones (2020). These three novels present different portrayals of Lugones, which also mirror their opposing views of the Argentine literary tradition. Piglia, Feiling, and Aira look back at the so-called national poet when self…

Essays in (Transatlantic) Transition: The Argentine Journal Sitio (1981–1987) and Alberto Cardín's Como si nada (1981)
This article undertakes a comparative study between the Argentine journal Sitio (1981–1987) and Alberto Cardín’s book Como si nada (1981). Both Sitio and Cardín exercise and redefine the essay form when questioning and confronting the intellectual’s position in the face of the Argentine and Spanish democratic transitions. By adopting a polemical standpoint, they extrapolate their considerations about essayists’ status into a redefinition of the i…
Alberto Cardín, yo mismo: Transatlantic essayism and psychoanalysis in Como si nada (1981)
Spanish cultural history has relegated Alberto Cardín to oblivion due to his uncomfortable intellectual stance. Cardín’s marginal placement illuminates and delineates the Transition’s cultural conflicts: champions of transitional dissent faced being either excluded entirely or incorporated into the hegemonic logics of consensus. In Como si nada (1981), Cardín crafts an intransigent and polemical essay that openly challenges the Transition’s polit…
The Avant-Garde Is Dead, Long Live the Avant-Garde: Glauber Rocha's Rereading of Brazilian Modernismo and Di Cavalcanti
This article examines Glauber Rocha’s Di-Glauber as a filmic rereading and interrogation of Brazilian Modernismo and Emiliano Di Cavalcanti’s position in the Brazilian artistic tradition. Di-Glauber transforms Di Cavalcanti’s funeral into an anthropology of images, exploring established and possible relations between art, death, and society. Its unorthodox cinematic approach deconstructs Modernismo and Di Cavalcanti’s canonisation within Brazil’s…
