Exploring the Guale Village and Spanish Mission Occupations at the Sapelo Shell Ring Complex Through Bayesian Analysis
Bayesian analysis of radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates in North American archaeology is increasing, especially among archaeologists working in deeper time. However, historical archaeologists have been slow to embrace these new techniques, and there have been only a few examples of the incorporation of calendar dates as informative priors in Bayesian models in such work in the United States. To illustrate the value of Bayesian approaches to sites with bot…
Santo Domingo de Talaje: Resurrecting a seventeenth-century Spanish mission at Darien Bluff, Georgia
This paper presents an overview of archaeological investigations conducted at Darien Bluff, McIntosh County, Georgia, over the past 75 years. The discovery of lost artifacts, missing excavation records, and several draft reports provided an opportunity to obtain a comprehensive overview of Spanish Mission period activity at the site of Mission Santo Domingo de Talaje, a primarily seventeenth-century mission that once stood on the banks of the Alt…
The Case for Radiocarbon Dating and Bayesian Analysis in Historical Archaeology
Life among the tides: Recent archaeology on the Georgia Bight : proceedings of the Sixth Caldwell Conference, St. Catherines Island, Georgia, May 20-22, 2011
494 pages : illustrations (some color), maps (some color) ; 26 cm. Conference sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History and the St. Catherines Island Foundation
The Eastern Archaic, Historicized . Kenneth E. Sassaman
Holocene Hunter-Gatherers of the Lower Ohio River Valley
Archaic Hunter-Gatherer Landscape Use in West-Central Kentucky
Recent fieldwork near Cypress Creek, a tributary of the Green River in western Kentucky, clarifies our understanding of Archaic Period (10,000–3000 b.p.) occupation and land-use. A survey of 611 ha of land identified 40 previously unknown sites in four environmental zones. These data were used in conjunction with museum collections and the state site file to show that the Archaic population of the area varied in size over time, the use of differe…
Middle Archaic Bone Pins: Evidence of Mid-Holocene Regional-Scale Social Groups in the Southern Midwest
Carved and engraved bone pins collected from eight sites along the Middle Mississippi and Lower Ohio Rivers and their tributaries are used to investigate the development of regional-scale social interaction among increasingly more sedentary late Middle Archaic (6000-5000 B.P.) hunter-gatherer groups. The similarity in pin morphology and decoration suggests an increasing level of social integration among groups that were shifting from a residentia…
Archaeology of the Central Mississippi Valley
The Archaeology of Carrier Mills: 10,000 Years in the Saline Valley of Illinois
A comparative analysis of the nitrogen content of bone as a means of establishing a relative temporal ordination of prehistoric burials
