Neither the Querns nor the Cross Ledge are sandbanks in the proper sense, since it seems probable that they are chalk outcrops with an occasional sand capping. The analysis which follows is based on an examination of the shape of the submarine features in question. Knowledge of the shape is derived from hydrographic surveys.
