HTLV in the Americas
It has been 25 years since the discovery of the first human retrovirus, human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) (1). Soon after HTLV-1 was discovered, a second human retrovirus, HTLV-2, was described (2). In 2005, two new human retroviruses, HTLV-3 and HTLV-4, were reported in central Africa HTLV-1 was the first retrovirus linked to human disease (5). It has been convincingly associated with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), HTLV-1-associ…
HTLV in the Americas
The first description of the human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was made in 1980, followed closely by the discovery of HTLV-2, in 1982. Since then, the main characteristics of these viruses, commonly referred to as HTLV-1/2, have been thoroughly studied. Central and South America and the Caribbean are areas of high prevalence of HTLV-1 and HTVL-2 and have clusters of infected people. The major modes of transmission have been through sexua…
Counseling blood donors seropositive for human T-lymphotropic virus types I and II in a developing country
Human T-lymphotropic virus types I and II (HTLV-I/II) are blood-transmitted retroviruses associated with leukemia, myelopathy, and uveitis. From 51,135 eligible blood donors at the Fundação Hemominas tested in 1993, 689 (1.35%) were repeatedly reactive to HTLV-I/II antibodies by enzyme immunoassay and were notified accordingly. Routes of transmission and preventive measures were emphasized in the orientation. Supplementary laboratory tests should…
