    Open Access•A Huhn, Annika Anderson•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2021

In 2018 the Anthropology Museum at California State University San Bernardino (USA) opened an exhibition entitled In|Dignity. The collaborative endeavour combined social science techniques, documentary photography, and theatre performances to present first person narratives of 43 community members. Participants represented marginalized demographics and intersectional identities that extended far beyond standardized approaches to 'diversity'. Thei…

  • Enacting Compassion

    A Huhn•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2017•Cited by: 1

In northern Mozambique, those who are ‘hot’ have the ability to harm others who are ‘cool’ through missteps in rules governing sexual activity and cooking. Such taboo complexes have been recorded across southern Africa, with analysis focused primarily on the polluting dangers of heat and the importance of metaphysical balance for well-being. My focus on hot/cold proscriptions as a cultural script – simple sentences that lay bare clear dominant so…

  • What is Human?

    Open Access•A Huhn•CHAPTER•Cooking Cultures•2016

Introduction The labelling of fellow humans as ‘cannibals’ is a trope employed by people across the globe, often in an effort to cast doubt on the humanity of detested neighbours or the mysterious inhabitants of distant lands. A well-documented example is that of European explorers and colonialists describing as man-eaters the people they encountered around the world in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, predominantly based on hearsay. The …

  • Information Curation among Vaccine Cautious Parents

    E J Sobo, A Huhn et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•2016•Cited by: 12•References: 36

To learn about pediatric vaccine decision-making, we surveyed and interviewed US parents with at least one child kindergarten age or younger (N = 53). Through an anthropologically informed content analysis, we found that fully vaccinating parents (n = 33) mostly saw vaccination as routine. In contrast, selective and nonvaccinating parents (n = 20) exhibited the type of self-informed engagement that the health care system recommends. Selective vac…

  • The Tongue Only Works Without Worries

    A Huhn•ARTICLE•Food and Foodways•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 14

This essay details how the foodways of an African town form and are informed by local conceptions of affective state, as reliant on embeddedness in the social order. Emotion both modifies appetite and determines foods’ perceived capacities to proffer energy to a consumer, with sanguine persons and foods mutually constituting one another. This makes the body not only a product of nutrition but also a determinant of it. Ethnographic data detail eth…
