Effects of Number of Sessions and Group or Individual Music Therapy on the Mood and Behavior of People Who Have Had Strokes or Traumatic Brain Injuries
This study investigated the relationship between changes in mood and behavior and the number and setting (individual or group) of music therapy sessions received by people who have had a stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Ten individuals who had had a stroke or TBl and some degree of depression received varying numbers of music therapy sessions in addition to standard rehabilitation. Some received group music therapy only while others were s…

Culture and Gender Effects in Pain Beliefs and the Prediction of Pain Tolerance
The goals of this study were (a) to explore beliefs about appropriate or normative pain responses among college students in the United States and India and (b) to examine differences in pain tolerance and intensity ratings and the role beliefs play in predicting pain tolerance. Scales to assess beliefs about appropriate pain responses in males and females were completed by college students in both countries. Ratings of pain intensity were then ob…
Validity Evidence for the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as a Measure of Hemisphere Dominance
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) scores were correlated with the Human Information Processing Survey (Taggart and Torrance, 1984) scales designed to measure brain hemisphere dominance to test the hypothesis that SN and JP scales of the MBTI are indicators of brain dominance. Correlations were in the expected directions, providing evidence of convergent and discriminant criteria of construct validity. A possible moderator effect involving gender…
Effects of Race and Criterion on the Predictive Ability of Beliefs and Attitudes
The moderating effect of soldiers' race was examined for responses to valences and instrumentalities of outcomes, as well as satisfaction, reported effort, and intention to reenlist. Subjects were 218 white and 54 black soldiers. Results tended to confirm previous findings regarding generally more positive responses by blacks than whites and of a tendency for extrinsic factors to be more salient for blacks than whites. However, the findings clear…

The contingency model of leadership effectiveness
The statistical and methodological adequacy of several aspects of Fiedler's (1967) contingency model of leadership effectiveness were considered. Data from several published studies were reanalyzed in order to accomplish this end. It was suggested that the use of rank order correlations instead of product moment correlations produces distortions related to sample size. LPC (least preferred coworker) was shown to be a reasonable predictor of group…
