How do Graduate Leaders in England discursively construct their leadership roles in early childhood education
The professionalisation of the workforce in early childhood education (ECE) is aligned with policy aspirations in England and internationally to raise the quality of provision, reduce inequalities in children's outomes, and improve standards. This article aims to consider how policy discourses of leadership are interpreted by Graduate Leaders, and the discursive conceptualisation and enactment of their roles in practice. The analysis adopts a ref…
Positioning theory as a framework for understanding the facilitation of professional development for educational leaders
The article addresses the problem of providing in-service education within government-led reform initiatives yet enhancing professionalism in the Early Childhood Education and Care sector. The study was conducted during policy-mandated reform in Australia to investigate effective ways to support educational leaders in centres rated as not meeting the national quality standard. Data were derived from a larger project designed as a formative interv…
Policies, Leadership, and Funding - Oh, My! How we are working together to improve perinatal care access & integration in Arizona, U.S
The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any high resource country, and it is the only country outside of Afghanistan and Sudan where the rate is rising. The rate of pregnancy-related mortality in the US increased from 7.2 pregnancy-related deaths per 100,000 live births per year in 1987 to 17.2 in 2017. In Arizona, almost half of all pregnancy-associated deaths in 2016-2018 or three out of five deaths were related to mental h…
Educational leadership in early childhood education: Participant vulnerability and a ‘rule of care’
There is considerable literature describing the use of Change Laboratory as a simultaneous research and intervention methodology in workplace settings. However, there is limited literature describing Change Laboratory from the researcher-facilitator perspective. This paper examines the ethical dimensions of Change Laboratory from this perspective and specifically how a ‘rule of care’ became a conscious rule. The context is a series of Change Labo…
If I play I won’t learn’: Children’s perceptions and experiences of transition and school readiness from Maternelle to Year 1
How children experience the major transition from pre-school to compulsory schooling influences their immediate and future success and wellbeing. This complex process of change and adaptation is impacted by school readiness policy drivers, which prioritise children’s performance and achievement. Pedagogic and curriculum progression shifts from play to work, with structured and adult-led activities. These factors contribute to the schoolification …
The Role of Slavery in Athenian Democracy: An Economic Perspective
Classical Athens is strongly associated with two phenomena: democracy, and slavery. The interaction between these two institutions, seemingly at odds when evaluated by modern standards, reveals a complex web of philosophical, social, and economic relationships. The question of whether or not Athenian democracy was predicated on slavery as an institution has been the subject of scholarly debate for centuries, and no strict answer has been reached.Ho…
The potential of ‘leading identity’ as an analytic concept for understanding Educational Leadership development in early childhood education
This paper responds to pressing calls to better theorise the development of Educational Leadership in early childhood education. Specifically, we examine the usefulness of) the concept of leading identity for understanding shifts in Educational Leaders’ accounts of their leadership practices. Twenty Educational Leaders, recruited from Australian early childhood services, were interviewed before and after a developmental intervention using Change …
Effects of Medicaid Expansions 2001–2015 on Supplemental Security Income Program Participation Among Childless Adults
Growing research indicates that Medicaid expansions reduce Supplemental Security Income (SSI) participation, although the magnitude of effects may vary with the presence of other health policy reforms. We examine how a series of Medicaid expansions for childless adults before and after implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) impact SSI participation among childless adults. We use the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey…
Policy rhetorics and responsibilization in the formation of early childhood Educational Leaders in Australia
This paper reports a rhetorical analysis of policy texts illustrating the emergence of the mandatory Educational Leader role in early childhood services in Australia. We argue that policy texts before 2012 constructed a ‘problem’ of workforce quality in early childhood education and offered a new leadership configuration as a policy solution. We identify and critically address how this social architecture was constructed and made persuasive throu…
Problematising policies for workforce reform in early childhood education: A rhetorical analysis of England’s Early Years Teacher Status
This paper examines workforce reform in early childhood education in England, specifically the policy trajectory that led to implementation of the Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) qualification in 2014. Taking a critical perspective on policy analysis, the paper uses rhetorical analysis to make sense of the how EYTS is understood within workforce reform. From an assemblage of salient policy documents, we report our critical analysis of two key t…

Converged play characteristics for early childhood education: Multi-modal, global-local, and traditional-digital
This paper discusses characteristics of converged play for early childhood education. The characteristics were derived from a four-year study of teachers’ interpretation and use of ‘web-mapping’ as an explicit conceptual tool, designed to mediate teaching practices and learning outcomes according to a definition of pedagogy as the relationship between teaching and learning. Three characteristics of converged play were identified via detailed anal…

Play as third space between home and school: Bridging cultural discourses
This article examines play as a conceptual third space that serves as a bridge between home and school discourses. Using sociocultural theories and an interpretivist framework, 19 immigrant mothers and their children in Canada were interviewed about their play experiences at home and in preschools. The findings reveal that children and teachers utilise play as third space in various ways. Although there is some cultural dissonance experienced by …
Free choice and free play in early childhood education: Troubling the discourse
This article troubles the established discourse of free choice and free play in early childhood education, and develops post-structural approaches to theorising children's agency in the context of institutional and relational power structures. It is widely accepted that planning a curriculum based on children's needs, interests and patterns of learning promotes agency, self-regulation and control. However, contemporary research extends this disco…
Travelling policy reforms reconfiguring the work of early childhood educators in Australia
Interventions in the field of early childhood education policy, drawn from global policy flows, are reconfiguring the work of early childhood educators in Australia. One such intervention is the requirement to designate an ‘educational leader’ (EL) in each service for young children and their families. This policy intervention has its origins in England's Early Years Professional Status initiative. This paper compares the pedagogical leader imagi…

Climate change and drought
Climate change is likely to increase drought risk during the 21 st century in many parts of the world. Climate model projections, under a range of emissions scenarios, consistently show that seasonal rainfall is likely to decrease across large parts of southern Europe, north Africa, central Asia and southern Africa, and reductions are also possible in other dry parts of the world. The effects of climate change, however, will be superimposed on th…

A new tactic for Triatoma infestans control: Fabrics impregnated with beta-cypermethrin
Triatoma infestans is the most important vector of Chagas' disease in Argentina. Experiences from Argentine national campaigns have shown indoor spraying to control triatomine bugs is both expensive and difficult. An alternative control method may be the use of pyrethroid-impregnated fabrics (PIFs), which could be both a practical and cheap complement to conventional control measures. In this study, a formulation of emulsifiable concentrate of be…
