  • Becoming with Education-Based Social Movements through Diffractive Analysis

    Open Access•Jennifer Lee O’donnell, Stephen T Sadlier•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Education Quarterly•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 21

In this article, we provide an overview of diffraction theory, followed by an explanation of diffraction as an analytical methodology. We highlight how tools like the agential cut can be used to redraw the boundaries of ethnographic research so that data can be a continuous becoming with the researcher. We offer vignettes from our work on education-based social movements that demonstrate how the agential cut opens a viewpoint for understanding ou…

  • Gleaning the Fields of Higher Education

    Open Access•Stephen T Sadlier•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2022•References: 22

The use of adjunct faculty in higher education has become a widely discussed labor practice. The voices of adjuncts are largely absent in this inquiry and advocacy, an absence which wrongly suggests adjuncts a lack voice or of agency. In the first part of this piece, I argue that adjuncts should contribute to their field of inquiry to destabilize the notions of contingent instructional workers as mere classroom proctors, in need of others’ advoca…

  • Encounters at Manuscript Preparation

    Open Access•Stephen T Sadlier, Stephen Sadlier•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2021•References: 5

This exercise of the researcher self explores relationships materializing in manuscript preparation, suggests that conflict-site research is more of a social and affective experience, from proposal to manuscript preparation, than most researchers realize. Outside of clinical and ameliorative approaches, little educational research focuses on ongoing, unresolved conflict. Even less sheds light on the experience of the conflict-site researcher. Her…

  • University as Secret Society

    Open Access•Jennifer Lee O’donnell, Stephen T Sadlier•ARTICLE•Society•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 27

Becoming a professor is complicated by a lack of clear guidelines for promotion to permanent status and, paradoxically, a surplus of mechanisms for institutional transparency. Drawing on Lilith Mahmud's anthropologies of discretion applied to secret societies like the Italian Freemasons, this paper compares becoming a professor to an initiate's journey toward becoming a member of a secret society. Membership in both requires a balance between kno…

  • Social movements and neoliberalisation in Latin American and Caribbean education

  • Care work by convocation

    Open Access•Stephen T Sadlier•ARTICLE•Global Studies of Childhood•2018•References: 8

This portrait of activist education, drawn from a larger ethnographic study into critical literacies and teacher activism in Oaxaca, Mexico in the wake of a teacher-driven social movement, showcases the celebrating of a popular, contentious national hero, Benito Juárez. In Mexico’s poorest region, where teacher mobilization on the streets and learning strategies in schools intersect, resistance to authoritarianism and instructional compliance wit…

  • La Parte Chusca of a Pedagogical Here and Now

    Stephen T Sadlier•ARTICLE•Journal of Latinos and Education•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Faced with repression and reform, humor has become tactical for public school teachers in Oaxaca, Mexico, engaged in a decades-old movement that after 2006 involved intensified street- and school-based pedagogies. This piece explores how humor adds to a political project via mocking names, images, and dictates of elite leaders to bring a here and now to what is taken as inaccessible in the teachers’ political lives. Humor forms part of an (e)sc(h…

  • Toward a society where everyone is always studying

    Stephen T Sadlier, María Cristina Arancibia•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 12

After the 1973 coup, Chile swung from a centralized state to a dictatorial decentralized one where education turned from a public to a private good. Since the 1990 restoration of democracy, market-based trends have endured, involving the fomentation of a knowledge society, one where everyone is always studying. The present study, drawn from an action research project to develop English for academic purposes at a top-ranked Chilean university, con…
