Accessing and Using Data without Informed Consent
We critically reflect on ethical challenges of making, accessing, and using audio/video recordings for social research in which participants have not and/or cannot provide informed consent. We distinguish between two types of data: recordings for which informed consent for use for research purposes would have been feasible but was not obtained, for example, “classic” or “legacy” data collected during the early development of Conversation Analysis…
Phase Structure and Resistance to Progressivity in Complaints Calls to the NHS
This paper examines how callers to an NHS complaints helpline get to “tell their story.” As project-based institutional calls, the closure of a complaints call is observably organized around “mutually ratified project completion.” Our analysis reveals the practices that callers deploy to resist call handlers' (CH) progress through the institutional phase structure of the call, thus also resisting ratification of their project as complete. We show…
Teenage Resistance to a Parental Threat
This conversation analytic study explores a single case of a teenager's resistance to a parental threat. Resistance in the conversation analytic literature typically refers to an interactional move that displaces a sequentially relevant or normatively expected next action. A resistant turn, while not aligning with the ongoing course of action, also avoids overtly disaligning with it. In this paper, we make the case for a particular form of resist…
Should we share qualitative data? Epistemological and practical insights from conversation analysis
Over the last 30 years, there has been substantial debate about the practical, ethical and epistemological issues uniquely associated with qualitative data sharing. In this paper, we contribute to these debates by examining established data sharing practices in Conversation Analysis (CA). CA is an approach to the analysis of social interaction that relies on audio/video recordings of naturally occurring human interactions and moreover works at a …
Negotiating relevance in pre-operative assessments
Grammar and Epistemic Positioning
Televised interviews embrace a diversity of genres and formats. The particular genre studied here, the British football post-match interview, seems to privilege evaluation and commentary from the interviewee. This article argues that this is achieved through interviewer turns that are predominantly assessment oriented. The analysis shows the impact of this assessment orientation on the grammatical formatting of the interviewer turns and how it in…
Choosing Not to Repair
Problems in conversation with those who suffer from aphasia often result in long sequences of repair, hindering progress. This article identifies an aphasic speaker's creative adaptation of a familiar linguistic resource to try and get around the problem. He uses the lexical apology sorry as a resource to close down collaborative word searching and to move the conversation forward. The analysis shows how he mobilizes the linguistic properties of …
