Factfulness
Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends - why the world's population is increasing; how many young women go to school; how many of us live in poverty - we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers. In Fa…
Working together to address global problems
The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG)'s annual Medals and Awards recognise achievements in researching, communicating and teaching a wide range of geographical knowledge. The speeches and citations are a record of the ceremony of 2014 with comments by Hans Rosling and Professors Geoffrey Boulton, Susan J Smith, Uma Kothari and John Dearing. The speeches encompass communicating geographical data, glaciology, environmental change, human geograp…
Are donor allocations for humanitarian health assistance based on needs assessment data
Donors have agreed to fund humanitarian assistance according to needs. We studied if project applications to a major donor, and the subsequent funding decisions for humanitarian health projects contained needs assessment data. In 2003, a total of 258 million SEK (37 million USD) was allocated by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) to 38 humanitarian health projects. Only 14 applications (37%) had data on the size of the ta…
Socioeconomic determinants of infant mortality
Background: To reach the Millennium Development Goals for health, influential international bodies advocate for more resources to be directed to the health sector, in particular medical treatment. Yet, health has many determinants beyond the health sector that are less evident than proximate predictors. Aim: To assess the relative importance of major socioeconomic determinants of population health, measured as infant mortality rate (IMR), at coun…
High cassava production and low dietary cyanide exposure in mid-west Nigeria
Objective: To investigate if high cassava production levels indicate high consumption and high dietary cyanide exposure in three villages situated within the area of Nigeria with higher cassava production than predicted by a geographic model for cassava production in Africa. Design: Exploratory assessment of: cassava production and processing by qualitative research methods and quantification of residual cyanogens in products; cassava consumption…
Ecological variation of intake of cassava food and dietary cyanide load in Nigerian communities
Aim: To study the ecological variation of intake of cassava foods and dietary cyanide load. Design: Ecological study design. Setting: Five communities in south-western Nigeria where tropical ataxic neuropathy (TAN) was described as endemic (area A), 11 communities in south-western Nigeria where TAN was described as absent (area B), and five communities in northern Nigeria (area C). Subjects: Subjects were randomly sampled from selected communitie…
Coverage and Cost of Iodized Oil Capsule Distribution in Tanzania
Distribution of oral iodized oil capsules (IOC) is an important intervention in areas with iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) and low coverage of iodized salt. The mean reported coverage of 57 IOC distribution campaigns from 1986-1994 of people aged 1-45 years in 27 districts of Tanzania was 64% (range 20-96%). This declined over subsequent distribution rounds. However, due to delayed repeat distribution, only 43% of person-time was covered, based…
The importance of being bitter—a qualitative study on cassava cultivar preference in Malawi
We conducted qualitative interviews in Nkhata‐Bay district in Malawi to elucidate why farmers preferentially grow cassava cultivars providing bitter roots. Cassava was mainly grown to produce flour for making the staple food, kondowole. Plants were identified as belonging to one of the 54 mentioned cultivars with local names. All the farmers stated that bitter taste of roots predicted toxicity and necessity for processing. Cultivars were grouped …
High cassava consumption without cyanide exposure in Kinshasa, in former Zaire
In Kinshasa, the capital of former Zaire, cassava is the dominant staple food and it is mainly supplied from Bandundu and Bas‐Zaire regions. In Bandundu, consumption of short‐soaked and insufficiently dried cassava roots has caused high cyanide exposure that was associated to acute poisonings and outbreaks of the paralytic disease konzo. As no such effects have been reported from the capital, we investigated if cassava consumption resulted in cya…
Insufficient processing of cassava induced acute intoxications and the paralytic disease Konzo in a rural area of Mozambique
A small outbreak of paralysis was studied in a rural area of Mozambique. The seven subjects examined had an isolated spastic paraparesis with abrupt onset during a food shortage period following a drought. The diet at onset consisted almost exclusively of leaves and insufficiently processed roots from a recently introduced high‐yielding bitter cassava cultivar. Symptoms of acute intoxications some hours after meals were frequent. A high dietary c…
