David Phillips, David A Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•KIVA•2022•References: 3

Most of the archaeological collection from Tijeras Pueblo (LA 581) was curated at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, University of New Mexico. As was typical of archaeological repositories in the mid- to late twentieth century, the collection was stored in a warehouse, using non-archival materials, with minimal curation records. Beginning in 2004, a massive volunteer effort led to the complete reorganization of the Tijeras Pueblo collection. Thi…

This article discusses the results of archaeological investigations carried out by the Pontine Region Project (PRP) near the site of Astura in the coastal part of the Pontine Region. • American Exceptionalism in American Samoa

    Open Access•K Armstrong•ARTICLE•Suomen Antropologi Journal of the…•2008

American Samoa has been a territory of the United States for 108 years. For fifty ears of this period, American Samoa was administered by the U.S. Navy. Thepolicies of the naval administration established practices of militarization-that is, integrating the military and its values into the lives of the locals-that continue today. Significant numbers of American Samoans serve in the various branches of the U.S. military; Samoans participate in, an…

  • Rhetorical nationalisms

    Open Access•K Armstrong•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2005•References: 2

The international news during the summer of 2004 was full of ethnic fighting and a ‘war on terrorism’ that reached around the world. These events raise again the topic of nationalism. Using examples of rhetorical nationalism from two cases, Finland and the United States, this article examines these two distinct expressions of nationalism, how they are based on differing systems of valuation and on whether the message is directed to internal or ex…

  • Fundamentalism and the Secular Society

    Open Access•K Armstrong•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•2004

FUNDAMENTALISM IS AN UNSATISFACTORY TERM, but it is widely used to describe a militant piety that has developed in every major religion during the 20th century. The aim of fundamentalists-be they Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, or Buddhist-is to bring God and/or religion from the sidelines to which they have been relegated in secular culture and back to centre stage. It constitutes a widespread rebellion against secular modernity. In ever…

  • Jerusalem

    K Armstrong•ARTICLE•Islam and Christian–Muslim…•2002•Cited by: 2

Focusing on the central role the city of Jerusalem plays in Christianity, Judaism and Islam, this paper addresses the question of what makes particular cities 'holy' and sacred to people, the meaning and responsibilities that this 'sacredness' entails and whether this 'sacredness' in fact affects the conduct of politicians when determining the fate of a sacred city such as Jerusalem. Answers to these questions are found deep in the human psyche, …

  • Ambiguity and Remembrance

    Open Access•K Armstrong•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2000•Cited by: 4•References: 11

In this article, I explore the complicated relationship between individual experience and national events, the way this relationship is narrated, and how individual memory becomes part of a collective memory. By looking at memoirs written by the descendants of Thomas Rantalainen, and focusing on personal correspondence, I show how the contents of letters written 60 years ago relate to events in Finland's history that are still being discussed tod…

  • The Holiness of Jerusalem

    K Armstrong•ARTICLE•Journal of Palestine Studies•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Since the 1967 war, Jerusalem and the Jewish holy places have acquired a new centrality even in the traditionally secular Labor Zionist vision. After noting a parallel shift toward religiosity among the early Christians following the excavation of the Holy Sepulchre, the author discusses the connection between sacred relics and identity as well as the impulse to demolish rival artifacts and claims. Drawing numerous examples from history and scrip…

  • Women, Tourism, Politics

    K Armstrong•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•1977•Cited by: 2

Voluntary associations are important to both women and men in a rural Scottish village, although the orientation of the associations differs. While men's associations are primarily economic or political, women's associations stress voluntary service. Women's involvement in volunteer service serves as a consciousness-raising force regarding their social, economic and political status. Through one association in particular, the Women's Rural Instit…
