    Open Access•Stephen Axon, Amanda Bertana et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 57

The ocean and coasts are largely absent from the 'Green New Deal' proposal. In response to the limited attention paid to the sustainability and equitable governance approaches of the blue economy, a US 'Blue New Deal' has been proposed aiming to protect the health of the ocean and support coastal communities' adaptation to climate change. The Blue New Deal emerged as a central policy proposal from 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth …

  • Just energy transitions? Social inequities, vulnerabilities and unintended consequences

    Open Access•Stephen Axon, John Morrissey•ARTICLE•Buildings and Cities•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 30

The transitions literature has framed energy transitions as a process involving material and social consequences. Such radical changes can also be viewed as constituting discursive dimensions, involving debate, idea exchange and value positioning. The implementation of a biomass energy system in residential buildings in a socioeconomically deprived community near Liverpool, UK, is investigated for its acceptance by, and impacts on, the community.…

  • Affordability, security, sustainability? Grassroots community energy visions from Liverpool, United Kingdom

    Open Access•John Morrissey, Ellen Schwaller et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 19

Envisioning societal futures for systemic low carbon transition is key to supporting the emergence of new configurations of the energy system. Such visions or ‘imaginaries’ facilitate wider societal support for system change. Given the urgency of the decarbonisation agenda, societal understandings of transitions processes and community ideas and visions about pathways for change assume a key role. The paper addresses an important gap in knowledge…

  • Contextualizing climate justice activism

    Open Access•Mari Martiskainen, Stephen Axon et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2020•Cited by: 51•References: 18

In August 2018, Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg started to strike from school on Fridays to protest against a lack of action on the climate crisis. Her actions sparked a historically large youth movement, leading to a series of school strikes across the world. Over the course of one week in September 2019, striking school children, students and other grassroots movements, such as Extinction Rebellion, called for everyone to participate in a globa…

  • The blue economy

    Open Access•Michaela Garland, Stephen Axon et al.•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2019•Cited by: 12•References: 41

There is currently no generally accepted definition for the "blue economy," despite the term becoming common parlance over the past decade. The concept and practice have spawned a rich, and diverse, body of scholarly activity. Yet despite this emerging body of literature, there is ambiguity around what the blue economy is, what it encapsulates, and its practices. Thus far, the existing literature has failed to theorise key geographical concepts s…

  • Relocation, relocation

    Open Access•Stephen Axon•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2017•References: 39

Within the context of an ageing population and the need to sustain hospital budgets, the nature and future of UK healthcare is changing. In the late 2000s, Stafford Hospital in Staffordshire was the centre of substantial public concern over poor care and high mortality rates. The dissolution of Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust (which ran the hospital) combined with the University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust led to the creation…

Open Access•Stephen Axon, Janet Speake et al.•ARTICLE•Area•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 31

While there is established academic literature on cartography and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), to date there has been scant investigation of attitudes towards the use of Satellite Navigation (Sat Nav) as a technology of navigation and the issues that may arise from its use. However, the impacts of Sat Nav tools on cartographic literacy, spatial awareness and graphicacy should be matters of interest and concern to geographers. This pape…
