Rediscovering the signal networks in Qing China through a multidisciplinary approach
This study uses a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the beacon towers and signal networks during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). Due to the loss of most relevant sites, the study of signal networks in Qing China has largely been neglected. Our team systematically examined 234 local gazetteers and 12 historical maps, through which we identified records of signal networks in 289 cities. These historical pieces of information were organized to…
Heritagisation by imagery: The significance of ancient Chinese architecture in Peking the Beautiful , 1927
This article examines the photographic volume Peking the Beautiful (1927) by Herbert Clarence White as a formative intervention in the global heritagisation of Chinese architecture. Produced amid rising cross-cultural interest and Republican China’s emerging preservationist ethos, the work combines photography and text to construct a proto-heritage discourse across six dimensions: historical, artistic, scientific, social, cultural, and environmen…
Weeping for Parents ( ku qin ): Lou Tseng-Tsiang's Family Mausoleum in Beijing (1920) as a Synthesis of Confucian Filial Piety and Catholic Faith
The psychology of Lou Tseng-Tsiang (1871–1949) – the famous Chinese diplomat and Beiyang Government politician who became a Benedictine monk in Belgium in 1927 – is not always easy to grasp. This article focuses on the family mausoleum and its garden that Lou built in 1920 for his parents in Beijing, opposite the Catholic cemetery of Zhalan. Not only a remnant of the material culture of the Christianised elite during the early Republic, it is als…

Unexpected Connections. The Benedictine Abbey of Maredsous and Christian Architecture in China, 1900-1930s
Recent research has revealed that the Benedictine abbey of Maredsous exerted significant but conflicting influences on missionary architecture in China through two different channels. These influences were by no means the result of a strategy pursued by the abbey of Maredsous. After having introduced the interwoven Belgian and Benedictine missionary networks in China, this article focuses on the two architectural connections of Maredsous in China…
Towards Modern Ceramics in China: Engineering Sources and the Manufacture Céramique de Shanghai
Chinese ceramic technology moved from craftsmanship to an industry-based science "ceramics engineering" from the 1840s to the 1940s. The study argues that construction activities induced the move, starting in architectural ceramics. Increasing efforts from architects, civil and railway engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, and chemical and geological engineers directed the development, ultimately incorporating China's porcelain and pott…

A pragmatic approach to church construction in Northern China at the time of Christian inculturation: The handbook “Le missionnaire constructeur”, 1926
In 1926, French Jesuit missionaries from Daming published at Xianxian (Hebei province) a little handbook for church construction in Northern China: “Le missionnaire constructeur, conseils-plans” (“The missionary builder: advice-plans”), containing 67 pages of text and 54 plates. After a short introduction about handbooks and pattern books of churches, this paper describes and analyses the handbook׳s content and its different practical aspects abo…
