Open Access•K Krishna Reddy, A Papa Rao•ARTICLE•The Open Anthropology Journal•2010

The present study examined the relationship among body composition, measures of self-rated health and activi- ties of daily living in a group of free living elderly aged >60 years belonging to poor economic status. A sample of 147 subjects (82 males, 65 females) from Tirupati suburbs of Andhra Pradesh, India was selected. The subjects were divided into three age groups i.e. 60-69, 70-79 and >80 years for comparison. Mean height, weight, circumfer…

  • Diversified genomic contribution among south Indian populations–A study on four endogamous groups of Andhra Pradesh

    Open Access•Kallur N Saraswathy, M P Sachdeva et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2008

Although the presently studied populations of Andhra Pradesh have heterozygosity similar to that of Nilgiri hill populations, the former are more closely placed on the PCO plot than the latter, who are more scattered. Also the gene differentiation (Gst) of the former is much lower than that of the latter, indicating considerable regional variation in the inflow of genes from diverse ethnic groups within south India

  • Single nucleotide polymorphisms in alcohol dehydrogenase genes among some Indian populations

    Open Access•Vadlamudi Raghavendra Rao, L V K S Bhaskar et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2007

Seven ADH genes, identified until now, located in the long arm of human chromosome 4, produce seven different isozymes involved in the metabolism of ethanol to acetaldehyde. Of the more than 500 SNPs reported in the coding and non‐coding regions of these genes in the world databases, 11 are more extensively studied. Three SNPs, ADH1B Arg47His (Exon3), ADH1B Arg369Cys (Exon9) and ADH1C Val349Ile (Exon8), are functionally validated in terms of phen…

  • Assessment of Growth Faltering Among Pre-School Children

    Open Access•Ch Venkateswarlu, K Krishna Reddy et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2004

In order to elucidate the effect of income levels and seasonal variation on growth pattern of preschool children, body-weight measurement was assessed in 200 pre-schoolers, in different communities like Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Backward Class (BC) and Other Caste (OC) with a sample size of 50 (25 boys+25 girls) in each group in the rural areas of Srikalahasti, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh. Nutritional grades were classifie…

  • ABO and Rh (D) Blood Groups Among the Telugu Speaking Fishing Community of Andhra Pradesh

    Open Access•A Papa Rao, K K Reddy et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2003•Cited by: 1

In the present study the blood samples of 92 unrelated subjects of the Telugu speaking fishing community of coastal Andhra Pradesh were analysed for ABO and Rh (D) blood groups. The overall picture of ABO percentage is O (45.65%)> B (32.60%) >A (15.21%) > AB (6.52%). The frequency of Rh+ve (92.39%) is more than Rh-ve (7.60%)

  • Consanguinity and Reproductive Health Among Kurichias

    Open Access•K K Reddy, A Papa Rao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2001

The degree of success or failure experienced by an organism in its effort to respond adaptively to an environmental challenge is estimated by different health indicators like fertility, mortality and morbidity. The rate of fertility, mortality and morbidity which are the expression of health and disease are studied among Kurichias - a tribal population of Kerala, in relation to consanguinity to understand the structure of a population. Consanguin…

  • Correlation Matrix and Linear Regression of Anthropometric Characters Among The Sugalis - A Tribal Population of Cuddapah District, Andhra Pradesh

Open Access•P Yadu Bhushana Reddy, A Papa Rao•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2001

With a view to know the average relationship of 14 anthropometric measurements, taken on the 1565 Sugali children (854 boys and 711 girls) of both sexes aged I to 20 years simple correlation co-efficients between pairs of variables and against age a straight line is fitted for the data. Among boys the relationship between all measurements is strong except for skinfold measurements. No negative correlation is noticed between anthropometric measure…

  • Growth pattern of the Sugalis - a tribal population of Andhra Pradesh, India

Open Access•P Yadu Bhushana Reddy, A Papa Rao•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2000

With a view to assess physical growth, a cross-sectional study was made on 1565 Sugali children (854 boys and 711 girls), aged 1 to 20 years. Anthropometric measurements included height, weight, upper arm circumference, biacromial diameter, biiliocristal diameter, chest circumference, head circumference and skinfold measurements at triceps, subscapular, suprailiac and medial calf. All anthropometric measurements except skinfold measurements exhib…

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) Among The Sugalis - A Tribal Population of Cuddapah District, Andhra Pradesh

Open Access•P Yadu Bhushana Reddy, A Papa Rao•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2000

Present study has been conducted to know the nutritional status of 1422 Sugali adults (705 males and 717 females) aged 21 to 60 years belong to 10 Sugali Thandas located in four mandals of Cuddapah district, Andhra Pradesh. The degree of mainutrition is assessed by using Body Mass Index (weight/height2). The study reveals that both Sugali males and females present high percentage in'Normal' grade and less percentage in 'severe' degree malnutritio…

  • ABO and Rh (D) Blood Groups among the Pattapu – A Marine Fishing Community of Andhra Pradesh

Open Access•A Papa Rao, Ch Venkateswarlu et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•1999

The incidence of blood groups ABO and Rhesus has been reported in 132 unrelated individuals of Pattapu, a marine fishing community of Nellore District of coastal Andhra Pradesh. The blood group O was observed with highest frequency (46%) followed by B (30%), A (22%) and the AB (2%). The distribution of allele frequencies of the blood groups among the Pattapu population showed similarities with other caste populations of Andhra Pradesh

    Open Access•K K Reddy, A Papa Rao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•1998

South Asian Countries have high prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) in parallel with economic development. Thus India is facing the high burden of CHD. Hence, live present study is aimed to assess CHD risk factors like serum lipids and lipoproteins in relation to obesity and distribution of body fat with reference to age. sex and life styles in an Indian population (Tirupati. Chittoor District. Andhra Pradesh). Information was collected on…

Open Access•N Uma, K Sreerama Krishna et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•1995

In the present study rural urban variation of blood pressure and anthropometric measurements among the Golla female of Nellore district has been investigated. Data collected on 75 rural and 75 urban females between 20 and 60 years of age. The mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures were found to be higher in urban ferrates than in the rural. The urban showed more body fat than the rural. The differences were explained due to the effect of urb…

A Papa Rao, Rami Reddy et al.•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1983•References: 8

The frequency of consanguineous marriages was studied in three endogamous castes, the Reddis (Kapus), Yadavas (Gollas), and Madigas of Marripadu village in South India. Inbreeding was higher among the Yadavas (Gollas) (0.0312) and Madigas (0.0271) than among the Reddis (Kapus) (0.0154) due to their higher frequencies of uncle‐niece marriages
