Expanding visual practices-Destabilizing ethnographic knowledge
The poetics of disappearance
Albania’s silenced archives Source: Photo by the author Ethnomusicologists move in a field where they are constantly confronted with different forms of sonic appearances and disappearances, tied to specific social situations. The very object of their study, they try to capture (listen to, record, analyse) is itself a fugitive medium, sound. Sound moves beyond individuals, communities, borders, times and is as transformable as it is fragile for di…
When the Trees Resound
The discussion about the impact the copresence of a researcher and their technological devices have on the ethnographic field has long been a critical point in ethno(musicological) research. Since the times of Jean Rouch, the presence of a cultural and technological outsider in the field has been considered a disturbing, potentially contaminating element-although necessary for the sake of documentation. This CD/book shows impressively, taking as …
Dangerous fields
This article focuses on the role of music in the context of humanitarian and existential crisis. It argues that the ethnographic field of the refugee camp is everything else than an unproductive space, a “waiting room” of the undesirables, an in-between space where social lives are suspended and where cultural life ceases to exist. It presents in a first part the particular spatial and temporal dimensions of a specific refugee reception center in…
Visuelle oder klangliche Spuren
This article focuses on the emerging ethnographic field 'refugee camp' and the challenges it poses in terms of an "engaged ethnomusicology" inscribed into a larger discussion about "public ethnography" and ethically informed collaborative practices. The prevailing focus of mass media and artists serves as a starting point, as they represent migratory phenomena primarily through the visual lens, through material artefacts, denying their multisenso…
Empty Migrant Rooms
The article explores "empty migrant rooms" in Central Albania and their photographic image as seen through an anthropology of absence. In which way can a dialogic work between ethnographer and photographer reveal the local meanings of such spaces as lieux de mémoire commenting on temporary absences and prospective presences? The authors explore the local terminology, the affective care and the social interaction generated by and around such rooms…
Academic Collaboration in Ideological Frameworks behind the Iron Curtain
Florentina C. Andreescu, From Communism to Capitalism. Nation and State in Romanian Cultural Production

Interreligious Cultural Practice as Lived Reality
This essay provides grass-roots insights into interreligiosity in Middle Albania. I focus on two individuals, Muslim Arif and Orthodox Anastas, to show how notions of cultural intimacy prevail over hegemonic discourses on religious identity that have re-emerged in postsocialist and 'post-atheist' Albania. The process of religious revitalisation took place simultaneously with a pervasive reshaping of local cultural identity. These discourses give …
Landscapes, soundscapes, mindscapes
This article aims at providing a state of the art of current interdisciplinary and comparative research approaches on the intrinsic links between sound and place. It explores the role of sound in appropriating and humanizing space, turning it into a place, a site of human intervention and sociocultural practice. The authors direct as well to the various refigurations of the sound and place correlation in an era of increased de-territorialization,…
Performing Absences. Seasonal Returns in South Albanian Villages
