  • Implications of legalizing artisanal chainsaw milling on social welfare, income distribution and the economic performance of sawyers in Cameroon

Achille Jean Jaza Folefack, Dietrich Darr•ARTICLE•The International Forestry Review•2022

Cameroon has been at the centre of global concerns about illegal timber logging for several decades, much of which has been driven by the informal timber sector. Hence, this study was conducted with the objectives to assess the benefits gained by different sawyer categories undertaking illegal timber logging and compare them to simulated legal benefits in order to envisage solutions to legalize the activity. Our results indicate that in spite of …

  • The Rural Exodus of Young Farmers and its Impact on the Shortage of Labor and Food Crop Production in Cameroon

    Open Access•Achille Jean Jaza Folefack•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2015•References: 4

Using a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model, this paper evaluates the impact of rural exodus on rural labor scarcity and domestic output and export of food crops in Cameroon. Model results indicate that, when 5 to 40 per cent of villagers migrate to the city, the urban unskilled labor force increases from +22.04 to +176.29 per cent. For the same rural-to-city migration rate, the domestic output of food crops falls down from -1.95 to -21.27…

  • Application of the Von Thünen Model in Determining Optimal Locations to Transport Compost for Crop Production Outside of Yaoundé, Cameroon

Open Access•Achille Jean Jaza Folefack, Jan F Adamowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This research developed and applied a non-linear von Thunen model to explore and determine optimal and profitable distances for transporting compost from the city-centre of Yaounde, Cameroon to surrounding farm areas. Baseline model results indicate that Yaounde’s annual compost production (124,320 tons) is only profitable for farms located within a 79 km radius of the city. Those farms located within a 79 km (or less) radius of the city can be c…

  • The Economic Costs of Illness from the Disposal of the Yaoundé Household Waste at the Nkolfoulou Dumping Site in Cameroon

Open Access•Achille Jean Jaza Folefack•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2008

This paper assesses the economic costs of illness from the disposal of the Yaounde household waste at the Nkolfoulou dumping site by using the cost of illness approach. The results show that, in comparison to the Yaounde-city population, people living near the dumping site of household waste are two times more exposed to various diseases due to environmental pollution. The medical cost expenses and the loss of earnings resulting from illness are …

  • Factors Influencing the Use of Compost from Household Waste in the Centre Province of Cameroon

Open Access•Achille Jean Jaza Folefack•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2008•Cited by: 1

The Centre province of Cameroon is facing both soil degradation problem in rural areas and the household waste management problem in Yaounde-city. However, those two problems can be solved by processing the household waste into agricultural compost. Actually, the produced compost is used by a few farmers living in the province. Thus, this article explains the factors influencing the utilization of compost by compost users and the reasons justifyi…
