  • Framing Flames: The structure of argumentative messages on the net

    Open Access•Edward A Mabry•ARTICLE•Journal of Computer-Mediated…•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 3

The purpose of this study was to assess the use, in computer-mediated communication, of the strategic message structuring tactic known as framing. Interlocutors in computer-mediated environments have software supported systemic resources facilitative of constructing messages using framing tactics in their argumentative discourse. It is hypothesized that framing strategies are related to the emotional tenor of a disputant's message and that a spea…

  • Evaluating the Effectiveness of Distance Learning: A Comparison Using Meta-Analysis

Open Access•Mike Allen, Edward A Mabry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2004

This article uses meta-analysis to summarize the quantitative literature comparing the performance of students in distance education versus traditional classes. The average effect (average r=.048, k= 39, N= 71,731) demonstrates that distance education course students slightly outperformed traditional students on exams and course grades. The average effect was heterogeneous, and the examination of several moderating features (presence or absence o…

  • Exploratory Analysis of a Developmental Model for Task-Oriented Small Groups

    Open Access•Edward A Mabry•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1975•Cited by: 10•References: 16

The purpose of this study was to describe and perform an exploratory analysis of a conceptual model for task-oriented small group development. The four phases of the model were defined as: latency, adaptation, integration, and goal-attainment. To test assumptions of phasic development, data from minute-byminute observations made on 30 groups of undergraduate women were collapsed into quarters and submitted to a one-way multivariate analysis of va…

  • Sequential Structure of Interaction in Encounter Groups

    Open Access•Edward A Mabry•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1975•Cited by: 6•References: 8

This study investigated patterned distribution of communication across time in an effort to assess temporal development in T-groups through the use of verbal interaction measures. Two groups conducted with a "meaning-attribution" facilitation style had their verbal interaction recorded as contiguous units of communication. Factor analysis of interaction categories produced nine dimensions labeled: Antagonistic, Assertive-Supportive, Dominant Asse…

  • Dimensions of Profanity

    Open Access•Edward A Mabry•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1974

The purpose of the study was to investigate the dimensions of profane language use by 283 college students. Responses to a questionnaire on personal use of “sexual vernacular” were submitted to factor analysis. Results of the factor analysis yielded five dimensions of profane language based upon predispositions to use such words. The five dimensions were labeled: Abrasive, Technical, Abrasive-Expletive, Latent, and Euphemistic. Results are discus…
