‘Mind the gaps’
BACKGROUND: There is growing global awareness of the pivotal role environmental factors, including pharmaceutical manufacturing waste, play in the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). India bears one of the highest burdens of AMR globally and possesses a substantial manufacturing sector, but limited insight is available on how to practically mitigate environmental AMR-related risk in this context. OBJECTIVE: To understand the…
Exploring the Joint Association of Road Traffic Noise and Air Quality with Hypertension Using QGIS
There is growing evidence linking exposure to air pollution and traffic noise with hypertension. The aim of this study was to examine the associations of registered hypertension cases and hypertension rate with exposure to air pollution and road noise. In this cross-sectional study, we linked the information from the NHS Scotland database of 776,579 hypertension patients' registrations and rates per 13.80 people at the Scottish NHS Board, HSCP, C…
Exploring links between road traffic noise, air quality and public health using DPSEAA conceptual framework
There is evidence that hypertensive heart disease is attributed to environmental noise and air pollution in European regions. Epidemiological studies have also demonstrated the potential role of road traffic air–noise pollution in adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension. Despite the local implementation of the EU Directive on environmental noise and air quality, it is necessary to explore the progress and u…
Antimicrobial Resistance as a Global Health Threat
The global COVID‐19 pandemic has exacerbated existing health, social, and economic challenges and threatened progress towards achieving the UN sustainable development goals. We discuss lessons learned from the COVID‐19 pandemic for global policymaking for health security governance, with a particular focus on antimicrobial resistance. We identify One Health as the primary foundation of public health risk management owing to the collaborative, mul…
Exploring the Combined Association between Road Traffic Noise and Air Quality Using QGIS
There is mounting evidence that exposure to air pollution and noise from transportation are linked to the risk of hypertension. Most studies have only looked at relationships between single exposures. To examine links between combined exposure to road traffic, air pollution, and road noise. A Casella CEL-63x instrument was used to monitor traffic noise on a number of locations in residential streets in Glasgow, UK during peak traffic hours. The s…
Recycling Plastics from Weee
Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) presents the dual characteristic of containing both hazardous substances and valuable recoverable materials. Mainly found in WEEE plastics, brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are a component of particular interest. Several actions have been taken worldwide to regulate their use and disposal, however, in countries where no regulation is in place, the recovery of highly valuable materials has promote…
Chemical and Microbial Leaching of Valuable Metals from PCBs and Tantalum Capacitors of Spent Mobile Phones
We compared chemical and microbial leaching for multi-metal extraction from printed circuit boards (PCBs) and tantalum capacitor scrap. A mixed consortium of acidophiles and heterotrophic fungal strains were used in the experiments and compared to chemical leaching using specific acids (sulfuric, citric and oxalic acids). Under optimum conditions, 100% extraction efficiency of Cu, and nearly 85% of Zn, Fe, Al and Ni were achieved from PCB and tan…
Development and Validation of a Box and Flux Model to Describe Major, Trace and Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in Scottish Soils
The box and flux model is a mathematical tool used to describe and forecast the major and trace elements perturbations of the Earth biogeochemical cycles. This mathematical tool describes the biogeochemical cycles, using kinetics of first, second and even third order. The theory and history of the box and flux modeling are shortly revised and discussed within the framework of Jim Lovelok's Gaia theory. The objectives of the investigation were to …
Soil from an Abandoned Manganese Mining Area (Hunan, China)
This study assessed the significance and potential impact of potentially toxic element (PTE) (i.e., Mn, Pb, Cu, Zn, Cr, Cd, and Ni) pollution in the surface soil from an abandoned manganese mining area in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, China, on the health of residents. The risks were sequentially evaluated using a series of protocols including: the geo-accumulation index (I geo ), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (RI),…
Efficient Removal of Cd(II) Using SiO2-Mg(OH)2 Nanocomposites Derived from Sepiolite
The pollution of Cadmium (Cd) species in natural water has attracted more and more attention due to its high cumulative toxicity. In the search for improved removal of cadmium from contaminated water, we characterized uptake on a recently identified nanomaterial (SiO 2 -Mg(OH) 2 ) obtained by subjecting sepiolite to acid-base modification. The structural characteristics of SiO 2 -Mg(OH) 2 were analyzed by means of SEM-EDS, Fourier Transform Infra…
The Impact of Physical Properties on the Leaching of Potentially Toxic Elements from Antimony Ore Processing Wastes
This study reports on the assessment of the impact of antimony mine wastes from Xikuangshan (XKS) Antimony Mine in Lengshuijiang City, Hunan Province. We focus on the leaching of a number of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from residues from the processing of antimony ore. The PTE content of ore processing waste and solutions generated by leaching experiments were determined for a suite of PTEs associated with the ore mineralization. These were…
The Potential of Remedial Techniques for Hazard Reduction of Steel Process by Products
The negative impact from industrial pollution of the environment is still a global occurrence, and as a consequence legislation and subsequent regulation is becoming increasingly stringent in response, in particular, to minimising potential impact on human health. These changes have generated growing pressures for the steel industry to innovate to meet new regulations driving a change to the approach to waste management across the industrial land…
Determination of Metal Content of Waste Mobile Phones and Estimation of Their Recovery Potential in Turkey
Waste mobile phones constitute one of the fastest growing Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) types all over the world due to technological innovations and shortening of their life span. They contain a complex mix of various materials, such as basic metals, precious metals and rare earth elements and represent an important secondary raw metal source. The main objectives of this study were to characterize the metal concentration of wa…
Decision support criteria and the development of a decision support tool for the selection of conservation materials for the built cultural heritage
Trace Metal Pollution in Topsoil Surrounding the Xiangtan Manganese Mine Area (South-Central China)
In this study, we identified the sources of trace metals, investigated their spatial distribution in topsoil and assessed their potential ecological risk in the area surrounding a typical manganese mining area in Xiangtan, Hunan Province, China. The concentrations of Mn, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cr and Hg in the topsoil of the study area were measured. Except for Cr and Hg, all trace metals exceeded the corresponding soil background values for Hunan P…
