Range Use and Trophic Interactions by Agropastoral Herds in Southeastern Kenya
Habitat utilization patterns and feeding interaction of free ranging agropastoral herds were investigated in two cycles of four consecutive grazing periods, in a semiarid environment, southeastern Kenya. The bites count and herd locations per area methods were used. During the dry season, areas of concentrated drainage; river valleys, bottomlands and ephemeral drainage ways absorbed a greater feeding load, taking 57.1 to 60% of the grazing time b…
Development of and Policy on the Range and Pastoral Industry with Special Reference to Kenya
In the present paper an attempt has been made to study proper guidelines on the integration of the use and conservation of rangeland resources, such as grazing lands, vegetation, soils, animals, and water, are necessary for the success of rural-based projects. Policies related to land ownership are also important. Land tenure change, for example, from communal use to individualization in Kenya has led to restriction of nomadic pastoralism. Curtai…
Land Use and Spatial Distribution of Two Gum and Incense Producing Tree Species in the Blue-nile Valley of Wogidi District, Ethiopia
The study was conducted in the Blue-Nile valley of Wogidi district in Ethiopia, where woody vegetation degradation associated with intensive land use activities has become a national concern. It was undertaken with an overall objective of documenting the impacts of land use and topography on the spatial distribution of two gum and incense producing tree species, Boswellia papyrifera (Del.) Hochst and Commiphora africana (A. Rich.) Engl. Five land…
Crop Residue Production, Utilization and Constraints to its Utilization for Livestock Feeding in Adami-Tulu District, Ethiopia
A survey involving 100 households was conducted in Adami Tulu district of Ethiopia to investigate the extent of crop residue production, utilization and socio-economic limitations facing their utilization for livestock feeding. The results indicated that although large amounts of crop residues arc annually produced and arc mainly used for livestock feeding, their full and efficient utilization was hindered partly by economic problems and partly b…
