Ousmane Sembène
This is the first biography of one of the most important African writers and filmmakers, a man who remains, as Gadjigo (Mount Holyoke College) puts it, 'an unknown celebrity.' The author intends to rectify this situation by retracing Sembène's trajectory from 1923 to 1956, the formative years in which Sembène (1923-2007) became a militant artist. The Problem Is More Mental Than Economic
After more than three years of work, Ousmane Sembène put the finishing touches on his feature film Moolaadé. This film was selected for the Cannes Film Festival (Un Certain Regard) and had its press screening on May 14, 2004, then its debut on May 15. Born: January 1, 1923, Ziguenchor, Casamance, Senegal Died: June 9, 2007, Dakar, Senegal Ousmane Sembene was known among film critics as father of cinema and, among filmmakers, as l'AIne des anciens (the oldest of the elders). He wrote ten books of fiction (novels and short stories) and one essay over a period of forty years (1956-1996) and, between 1962, the year he came to filmmaking, and 2004-forty-two years-he directed eighteen films: four sh…

Ousmane Sembene:La lutte continue! A Personal Tribute Samba Gadjigo In 1972, I was an eleventh-grade student at the Lycée Faidherbe, in the Senegalese city of Saint Louis, in northern Senegal. That year will remain deeply cast in my memory because it was the year a single book made me lose my political innocence and changed my worldview. God's Bits of Wood, acclaimed around the world as Sembene's masterpiece, was my first ever contact with "Afric…
