  • Investor Origin and Deforestation: Evidence from Global Mining Sites

Victoria Wenxin Xie, Wei You et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

Does mining activity lead to deforestation? How does investor origin affect the environmental impacts of mining operations? We investigate these questions by estimating the causal impact of mineral price changes on deforestation near mining sites. Combining global mine propertylevel data with high-resolution satellite imagery on forest cover, we find a positive elasticity of deforestation to mineral price shocks. This elasticity is significantly …

  • Nighttime lights, urban features, household poverty, depression, and obesity

Open Access•Yi-An Liao, Liliana Garcia Mondragon et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2023

Nighttime Light Emission (NLE) is associated with diminished mental and physical health. The present study examines how NLE and associated urban features (e.g., air pollution, low green space) impact mental and physical wellbeing. We included 200,393 UK Biobank Cohort participants with complete data. The study was carried out in two steps. In Step1, we assessed the relationship between NLE, deprivation, pollution, green space, household poverty a…

  • Global urbanicity is associated with brain and behaviour in young people

    Open Access•Jiayuan Xu, Xiaoxuan Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 56

Urbanicity is a growing environmental challenge for mental health. Here, we investigate correlations of urbanicity with brain structure and function, neuropsychology and mental illness symptoms in young people from China and Europe (total n = 3,867). We developed a remote-sensing satellite measure (UrbanSat) to quantify population density at any point on Earth. UrbanSat estimates of urbanicity were correlated with brain volume, cortical surface a…

  • Tolerance, Intergroup Contacts and Municipal‐Spatial Organisation: The Case of Jews and Arab Palestinians in the Tel‐Aviv Metropolitan Area

Open Access•Itzhak Omer, Ran Goldblatt et al.•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Economische en…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 45

The paper examines the willingness of Israeli Jews and Arab Palestinians for intergroup contacts during daily activities in diverse functional spaces and spatial organisational contexts within the metropolitan area of Tel‐Aviv, Israel. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted among visitors to public spaces in three mixed Arab‐Jewish areas: a mixed city; two adjacent Jewish and Arab suburban townships; and two relatively distant Jewish and Arab …

  • Using space syntax and Q-analysis for investigating movement patterns in buildings: The case of shopping malls

    Open Access•Itzhak Omer, Ran Goldblatt•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2017

In this study, we present the potential of the conjunction between space syntax and Q-analysis methodologies for investigating patterns of movement flows in buildings. This potential is illustrated by an implementation of the two methodologies by comparing between two shopping malls in Israel, which are characterized by distinct spatial configurations. Q-analysis was used to identify the spread of individuals’ movement paths and their conjunction…

  • Spatial patterns of retail activity and street network structure in new and traditional Israeli cities

    Itzhak Omer, Ran Goldblatt•ARTICLE•Urban Geography•2015•Cited by: 16

The association between spatial patterns of retail activity and the spatial configuration of street networks was examined by means of the space syntax methodology in eight Israeli cities that represent two city types, characterized by different planning approaches and urban growth: (i) new towns, which were established according to a comprehensive city plan and modern planning concepts of “tree-like” hierarchical street networks and “neighborhood…

  • The Relationship between Spatial Configuration and A rab Minority Residential Patterns in I sraeli Mixed Cities

    Open Access•Ran Goldblatt, Itzhak Omer•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Economische en…•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 26

This paper investigates how city's street network is related to the residential dynamics of the A rab minority's residential pattern in five Israeli A rab‐Jewish mixed cities. Based on the the space syntax methodological framework we analysed the metric and topological access between individual streets. The results obtained show an association between residential pattern changes and the relative access of individual streets to the core area of th…

  • Geographical Scale of Tolerance in the Urban Area

Itzhak Omer, Michael Romann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 15

The paper examines attitudes of mutual tolerance as expressed by the Jewish majority and the Arab minority in Jaffa, a mixed residential area in the city of Tel Aviv. More specifically, it focuses on the willingness of members of each group to share residential locations at different geographical scales (such as: the same housing unit, street, neighborhood, or the city as a whole). The survey’s findings indicate, as expected, that Arabs and Jews …
