Introduction to Clinical Psychology
Aggressive behaviour in adolescence: Links with self‐esteem and parental emotional availability
Aggressive behaviours during adolescence may be predictive of later conduct disorders, hence it is important to early detect their signals and deepen the study of their possible risk factors. In order to address these issues, our study pursued two main objectives: to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Italian adaptation of the Aggression Questionnaire Short‐Form (AQ‐SF), a form never previously used among Italian adolescents; and to inve…

Fathers' role in the etiology, prevention and treatment of child anxiety: A review and new model
How nonclinical are community samples
Mental health services are underutilized in our society by both adults and children. This finding presents a potential problem for researchers conducting community‐based research. Previous studies have demonstrated that community‐based researchers frequently do not screen participants for the presence of psychopathology nor do they ascertain whether therapeutic services are currently utilized. The present study explored the prevalence of psychopa…
Are Fathers Involved in Pediatric Psychology Research and Treatment?
BACKGROUND: Recently, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of the roles of fathers in understanding normative developmental processes. Increased attention has been given to the roles of fathers in the area of clinical child research and therapy. However, the presence of fathers in research and treatment in pediatric psychology has not been fully examined. OBJECTIVE: To explore the status of including fathers in both research and t…
Interparental Conflict, Adolescent Behavioral Problems, and Adolescent Competence: Convergent and Discriminant Validity
To address the lack of studies examining the convergent and discriminant validity of cross-informant ratings, several statistical approaches were used in this study to evaluate the convergent and discriminant validity for ratings of interparental conflict, adolescent behavioral problems, and adolescent competence. A total of 272 adolescent-motherfather triads completed measures assessing interparental conflict, adolescent behavioral problems, and…

Mothers, Fathers, Gender Role, and Time Parents Spend with Their Children
Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse: Are we Doing Enough
In response to an increase in public awareness and interest in the problem of child sexual abuse, programs have been developed to promote the awareness, prevention, and treatment of sexual abuse. These programs have been varied in scope, focus, and effectiveness. This article reviews the child sexual abuse literature, with particular emphasis on efforts aimed at the prevention of child sexual abuse. Prevention efforts targeting potential victims …
Partner Appraisal and Marital Satisfaction: The Role of Self-Esteem and Depression
This study examined whether people are more maritally satisfied when the valence of their partner's view of them is congruent with the valence of their self-view. In doing so, competing hypotheses derived from self-verification theory and self-esteem enhancement theory were examined. Married couples, recruited from the community and mental health facilities, completed measures of marital satisfaction, self-esteem, depression, and rated their spou…
Interparental agreement on internalizing, externalizing, and total behavior problems: A meta-analysis.
Beliefs and Attitudes About Sexual Aggression: Do Parents and Daughters Share the Same Belief System
This study investigated the correspondence between parents' and daughters' beliefs about sexual aggression and gender roles. The relationship between a woman's attitudes and her personal experiences with sexual victimization was also examined. The participants were 236 female undergraduates, 148 mothers, and 110 fathers. One hundred-three matching triads were collected. Participants evaluated victim responsibility for written scenarios depicting …
Trying to Turn Dichotomy into Continuity: Explorations of Motherhood
Perceptions of Parents: A Measure of Adolescents' Feelings About Their Parents
The majority of measures that assess the parent-child relationship are based on overt parental behavior. Given that a substantial percentage of youth do not have contact with their father, these measures often lead to missing data due to paternal absence. We describe a series of four studies that led to the development of the Perceptions of Parents (POP) measure, which can be completed by younger and older adolescents even if they do not have con…
Expanding the Mother-Child Paradigm: An Examination of Dissertation Research 1986–1994
Reliance on the mother-child dyad as the primary context for understanding child development has caused fathers to be underrepresented in published research on child development and developmental psychopathology. In order to investigate whether this pattern was also evident in the work of future psychologists, we reviewed Dissertation Abstracts from 1986 through 1994. Results showed that fathers were the focus of significantly fewer dissertation …
Conducting Nonsexist Research, Prevention, and Treatment with Fathers and Mothers: A Call for A Change
In published research and in unpublished doctoral dissertation research, fathers are underrepresented in the investigation of child and family functioning. A number of possible explanations for this underrepresentation are discussed, including researchers' use of sexist theories that either directly or indirectly result in mother blaming, family demographics that suggest fathers are less present in the lives of their children when compared with m…
Perceptions of mothers' and fathers' responsibility for children's behavior
Where's poppa? The relative lack of attention to the role of fathers in child and adolescent psychopathology
Compared with mothers, fathers are dramatically underrepresented in clinical child and adolescent research. The author reviewed empirical and theoretical clinical child and adolescent literature to ascertain the reasons for this underrepresentation. Four somewhat interrelated factors are discussed: practical issues in participant recruitment, differential base rates of paternal vs maternal psychopathology, theory-driven research based on sexist t…

The role of fathers in child and adolescent psychopathology: Make room for daddy
This review summarizes research concerning the relation between paternal factors and child and adolescent psychopathology. When compared with mothers, fathers continue to be dramatically underrepresented in developmental research on psychopathology. However, findings from studies of children of clinically referred fathers and nonreferred samples of children and their fathers indicate that there is substantial association between paternal characte…
Parent and child stress and symptoms: An integrative analysis
This study assessed major and daily stressful life events and psychological symptoms in a sample of young adolescents and their parents. The relation between major life events and symptoms was mediated by daily stressors for parents and their young adolescent children. Children's emotional and behavioral problems were associated with fathers' psychological symptoms but not with mothers' symptoms. Both mothers' and fathers' symptoms were associate…
An Instrument to Assess Students' Perceived Control at School
A scale developed to aid in investigation of students' perceived control at school is described, and data on its reliability, validity, and factor structure are reported. Also, discussed is a parallel instrument designed to measure the degree to which a student values such control. Findings reported indicate the usefulness of the perceived control scale by summarizing data from several studies, and the discussion highlights promising directions f…
