And in doing so he characterises the opposing view as persisting but not by having temporal parts – a view he calls endurance. But this dichotomous picture of Lewis, although now widely embraced, mi…
Powers: The No-Successor Problem
This essay considers the implications for the powers metaphysic of the no-successor problem: As there are no successors in the set of real numbers, one state cannot occur just after another in continuous time without there being a gap between the two. I show how the no-successor problem sets challenges for various accounts of the manifestation of powers. For powers that give rise to a manifestation that is a new state, the challenge of no-success…

On the Subject of "Java"
What are the limits of cultural critique? What are the horizons? What are the political implications? John Pemberton explores these questions in this far-reaching ethnographic and historical interpretation of cultural discourse in Indonesia since 1965. Pemberton considers in particular how the appearance of order under Soeharto's repressive New Order regime is an effect of an enigmatic politics founded upon routine appeals to cultural values.Thro…

Musical Politics in Central Java (Or How Not to Listen to a Javanese Gamelan)
Part of the peculiar attraction that music holds for Javanese is exposed in a standard gag performed by local comedy groups. Alone on stage, a domestic servant flourishing a long feather-duster is casually at work.1 Without warning, an offstage stereo blasts him with disco music. It evidently sounds good, irresistibly good, since the feather-duster, and then the arm and body attached to it, immediately begin to twitch in time to the music. The di…
Notes on the 1982 General Election in Solo
Historical events often seem more important to their witnesses than they do to historians who judge them later. When this thesis was completed in September 1972 it still appeared to me that the election it describes was a major landmark in the consolidation of the Suharto government and I thought that the enormous social problems appar ently ignored by Suharto would not prevent his administration from surviving for many years. Now as I write in the…
