  • What kinds of museums for what kinds of societies

    Thomas Thiemeyer•ARTICLE•ICOFOM Study Series•2020

The article reflects the broader political contexts of the current debate about ICOM’s museum definition. It focuses on the aim to commit museums to specific values that define their place within their respective societies. What kind of values are addressed? What is specific about them? And why did they trigger such a lively debate? To my mind the decisive question at the heart of the controversy is: Is the new text about an ambitious museum visi…

  • The Storeroom as Promise

    Open Access•Thomas Thiemeyer•ARTICLE•Museum Anthropology•2017•References: 7

This article concerns an exhibition format that I call the depot exhibition. These exhibitions are museum presentations that turn the depot into their subject matter. (“Visible storage” is the most well‐known variant.) While this approach to museum exhibition has a current appeal, especially in German‐speaking countries, it is not new. Its appearance in North America in the 1970s was connected with postcolonial debates and coincided with a contro…

  • Depotausstellungen Die Erfindung eines Ausstellungsformats aus dem Geist der Institutionenkritik

    Open Access•Thomas Thiemeyer•ARTICLE•Historische Anthropologie•2017

The storeroom or depot is the dark side of the museum. It is its unknown, hidden space. The cultural anthropologist Gottfried Korff argued that this relationship between the hidden and the public side, for which he coined the catchy phrase “deponieren – exponieren” (deposit-exhibit), was the essential feature of the modern museum, both as an institution and as a generator of meaning. It is along this boundary that the curator’s task in the storer…

  • Work, specimen, witness

    Open Access•Thomas Thiemeyer•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2015•Cited by: 2

The generic term 'museum objects' suggests that a uniform category is involved. But museums in various disciplines have exhibited objects according to quite different rules and have assigned values to them that depend on the standards of the field of inquiry concerned: aesthetic quality, value as a historical source, as a relic or as a representative item. Over time, various display conventions have become established, which appear to us today to…

  • Zwischen Helden, Tätern und Opfern

    Thomas Thiemeyer•ARTICLE•Geschichte und Gesellschaft•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This essay examines ten contemporary museums in France, England and Germany that represent World War I and II in a permanent exhibition. Focussing on heroes, victims and perpetrators, the text tries to show the memory-making power of display. Its analytical dividing lines run parallel to the different national memories and the dissimilar memories ofWorldWar I andWorldWar II. From this perspective, the essay tries to answer two questions: How do m…
