Special Section: Pruning the Tree of Knowledge
There are several intellectual projects embedded within the Tree of Knowledge (ToK) System and they tend to blur together at critical junctions. The aim of this commentary is to identify some of these strands of analysis and their implicit metaphysical presuppositions. It is argued that the presuppositions are not consistent across the different strands. The strands can continue to be pursued independently, insofar as they have distinct purposes.…
Unity Versus Multiplicity: A Conceptual Analysis of the Term “Self” and Its Use in Personality Theories
There is no single answer to the unity–multiplicity problem regarding the self for the simple reason that the term “self” is used by too many different theorists in too many different ways. In fact, there are several important substantive topic areas that need to be distinguished and studied scientifically. The topic areas I examine in this article are reflexivity , unit coherence , agency , and subjectivity . Each of these areas will be evaluate…

This article examines some alternative ways in which some of the disorganization is being actively created by forms of argumentation used in reporting and discussing psychological research. One institutionalized form of argumentation used in repor…

Life contexts and health-related selves in old age
Individualism and Collectivism in the Personal Meaning System of Elderly Adults: The United States and Congo/Zaire as an Example
Two problems in cross-cultural research are the increasingly complex definitions of individualism and collectivism and the relation between culture and self. A cultural psychological perspective on the construction of meaning can address both problems. In attributing meaning to self and life, people appropriate cultural values so that even the most authentic level of experience, the self, is culturally constituted. People are expected to use diff…
