Shaping the Constitutional Dialogue on Federalism
This article challenges the view that the Supreme Court has become the predominant authority on the constitutional distribution of rights and entitlements among governments in the Canadian federation. By assuming this position of supremacy, critics continue, the Court has usurped key policy functions that belong to political actors, a move that has undermined democratic governance in Canada. The intergenerational transmission of fertility in contemporary Denmark
Using the Danish Fertility Database, we investigate intergenerational fertility transmission, including the relationship between the number of children born to those aged 25 and 26 years in 1994 and the number of their full sibs and half-sibs. We find that the fertility behaviour of parents and their children is positively correlated, and that half-sibs and full sibs have broadly similar effects. We do not find, in this complete national populati…

Economic Models of Fertility in Post-war Britain - A Conceptual and Statistical Re-interpretation
The ‘New Home Economics’ theory is described briefly, and Leibenstein's conclusion in 1974 that empirical tests of the model have been unsuccessful is re-assessed and found to be confirmed for the case of some widely cited econometric studies in which macro-level time-series data are used. The pitfalls in formulating, fitting and interpreting such models are examined, and it is argued that the sorts of explanations which have been used to dismiss…

Relative risk estimation from vital statistical data
A previously described method of obtaining an estimate of relative risk from routinely available data was applied to data on cigarette consumption and lung cancer mortality to test its validity. Some shortcomings of the method were noted and an alternative approach using weighted logistic regression gave results closer to those predicted on the basis of other studies, without the disadvantages of the original technique
