Industrial Conflict and the Coming of the New Deal: The Triumph of Multinational Liberalism in America
Increased Long-Term Mortality among Black Cabg Patients Receiving Preoperative Inotropic Agents
The aim of this study was to examine racial differences in long-term mortality after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), stratified by preoperative use of inotropic agents. Black and white patients who required preoperative inotropic support prior to undergoing CABG procedures between 1992 and 2011 were compared. Mortality probabilities were computed using the Kaplan-Meier product-limit method. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals …
Risk-Adjusted Survival after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: Implications for Quality Improvement
Mortality represents an important outcome measure following coronary artery bypass grafting. Shorter survival times may reflect poor surgical quality and an increased number of costly postoperative complications. Quality control efforts aimed at increasing survival times may be misleading if not properly adjusted for case-mix severity. This paper demonstrates how to construct and cross-validate efficiency-outcome plots for a specified time (e.g.,…
Racial Differences in Survival among Hemodialysis Patients after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
The aim of this study was to examine racial differences in long-term survival among hemodialysis patients after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). To our knowledge this has not been previously addressed in the literature. Black and white hemodialysis patients undergoing first-time, isolated CABG procedures between 1992 and 2011 were compared. Survival probabilities were computed using the Kaplan-Meier product-limit method and stratified by r…
Preservation and Research of Sacred Sites by the Zuni Indian Tribe of New Mexico
Sacred sites are important in the ceremonial life of the Zuni Indians of the American Southwest. To protect these sites, both on and off the Zuni Indian Reservation, the Zuni Tribe has used two research and management strategies: (1) historic preservation, and (2) legislation and litigation. In this article, the Zuni Tribe's use of historic preservation to manage sacred sites is analyzed using the report series of the Zuni Archaeology Program. Wh…
The Political Economy of Knowledge and The Changing Politics of Philosophy of Science
The most striking characteristic of academic thought is its innocence. What follows is an argument that this innocence grossly distorts current discussions of the role of falsification in the growth of scientific knowledge. Specifically, that the real causes of the irresolution and aimlessness of the dispute are the diverse images of the societal functions of science, comprising both descriptive and prescriptive components, held firmly, although …

The Hospitals 1800-1948
Public health in Britain in the climate of the nineteenth century
The nineteenth century was a time of paradox — the third quarter, generally regarded as an age of unprecedented prosperity, also reached high-water levels of mortality and pauperism. Everywhere was much that was squalid. The popular attitude to health was less than enthusiastic and administrative machinery was largely ineffective. Such machinery as there was, was busily occupied with attempts to mitigate gross environmental abuses. But the stage …

Growing up in Newcastle upon Tyne
There can be few individuals concerned with the health and welfare of children who to-day are unaware of the Tyneside Thousand Family Survey, as the investigation has come to be known The primary purpose of this clinical and epidemi- ological study, started in 1947 and still continuing, was to reveal the pattern and extent of disease in Newcastle children, particularly the origins and associations of ill-health and abnormality in the young.Hither…
