  • Enfermedad, Medicina y Magia en el sistema filosófico de Schopenhauer

    Open Access•Daniel Escobar López•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2021

This paper analyzes the very possibility of disease - understood as an imbalance of a living organism - in Schopenhauer's philosophical system. Magic, specifically "sympathy cures", imply an irruption into the physical (and physiological) world of the omnipotence, of the essential subject, which created it. But if this world is considered to be a mechanism regulated by virtue of the laws of Nature, not even the idea of a magical cure (which impli…

  • The Shifting Phases of a Commodity: Textiles and Ethnic Tourism on a Lake Titicaca Island

Open Access•Daniel Escobar López•ARTICLE•The University of Western Ontario…•2012

The case study of the island of Taquile in the Peruvian part of Lake Titicaca will be used to explore how textiles functions as intermediaries for social interactions and change and how they respond to demands from ethnic tourism. By using theories of material culture, specifically the analytical approach of "the biography", I aim to shed light on the process by which some textiles in Taquile have passed from being the person’s “second skin” to a…

  • Panethnicity in the United States: A theoretical framework

Daniel Escobar López, David López et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•1990•Cited by: 145•References: 22

Panethnicity - the development of bridging organizations and the generalization of solidarity among ethnic subgroups - is important theoretically because it focuses attention on ethnic change, and allows one to assess the relative importance of structural and cultural factors. In this article we present a framework for the study of panethnicity, generate research questions from this framework, and then test these questions by examining panethnici…

  • Untangling Structural and Normative Aspects of the Monority Status-Fertility Hypothesis

Daniel Escobar López, David E Lopez et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1978•Cited by: 19

Since the residual differential fertility of racial and ethnic minorities can be explained in theoretically opposed ways, effects due to subcultural norms can be established only by direct measurement. Data from a recent survey of Los Angeles Chicano couples indicate that ethnic integration is actually associated with reduced fertility, suggesting that the structural negative minority-status effect on fertility hypothesized by Goldscheider and Uh…
