Open Access•Shannon Malone Gonzalez, Santiago Melián-González•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research•2026

This study examined the automatability of hotel jobs in four- and five-star sun-and-beach hotels in Spain using a task-level engineering-bottleneck approach. A total of 202 tasks from key hotel jobs were rated across eight bottlenecks under two scenarios: moderate to severe and severe. Open Access•A J Powell, F M Deckard et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Criminology•2026

This paper engages abolition feminist storytelling as a methodology for feminist criminologists to identify, reflect on, grapple with, and ultimately confront carceral logics in the stories we (re)tell about violence and punishment. Drawing on over a decade’s worth of research, advocacy, and community organizing, we identify three carceral tensions that emerged within our own storytelling: the victim-offender binary, researcher complicity, and a …

  • Jobs and tasks as a starting point for work automation research

Shannon Malone Gonzalez, Jacques Bulchand Gidumal•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2025

As automation technology has proliferated in tourism through robots, chatbots and kiosks, research on work automation has also increased, leading to concerns about the impact of automation technologies on employment. However, research has generally ignored the tasks performed in each job. This issue has been highlighted in the literature as an explanation for why the expected impact of automation technology on job losses has not occurred. This st…

Open Access•Shannon Malone Gonzalez•ARTICLE•PASOS Revista de Turismo y…•2025

In many countries and regions, tourism activity is viewed as a means of increasing income and employment for local people. Research confirms that tourism development boosts employment. However, studies have neglected the quality of jobs. Job quality is a concern for policy makers and is considered a determinant of individual well-being. The quality of jobs in tourism is generally perceived to be low. Most evidence with respect to tourism job qual…

  • Perpetual encounters: Reconceptualizing Police Contact and Measuring Its Relationship to Black Women's Mental Health

    Open Access•F M Deckard, Shannon Malone Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 69

Research and media discussion of police contact routinely conceptualize it as time-constrained interactions between officers and civilians. However, extant literature documents preparation for encounters and post-encounter advocacy, which each challenge restricted understandings of contact and, importantly, its relationship to mental health. We introduce 'perpetual encounters' to both theoretically and empirically move closer to the temporally un…

  • Fighting fake reviews with blockchain-enabled consumer-generated reviews

Jacques Bulchand Gidumal, Shannon Malone Gonzalez•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2024

Online consumer-generated reviews are part of eWOM (electronic word of mouth). These reviews are very important for tourists in their decision-making processes regarding purchases and bookings. The reviews can be found in two types of sources: websites that sell the product and independent websites. In both cases, current review systems have relevant shortcomings: the possibility of fake reviews, the representativeness of those who review, platfo…

Based on 32 in-depth interviews with black women, this paper analyzes the racialized and gendered impact of vicarious exposure to police encounters on social media. We draw from Smith’s (2016) sequelae to describe the lingering effects of anti-black state violence, particularly grief and mourning. For Black women, the manifestation of sequelae from online exposure includes: a) amplification of police brutality, b) identification with victims, c) …

Based on 32 interviews with black women, we find that they use witnessing, or the mobilization of others as observers to police encounters. Research demonstrates the rising role of videos and smartphones in documenting encounters wit…

    Open Access•Shannon Malone Gonzalez•ARTICLE•Technology in Society•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 34

Gig economy delivery services such as food delivery are common in many cities. The business models for these services rely on self-employment. Studies suggest that this model can negatively affect service quality and client satisfaction. This study proposes that food-delivery services in the gig economy will show worse results compared to traditional professional service companies regarding service quality and client satisfaction. Yet, little research investigates how police and black civilians-two groups invoked in discourse on "police-minority relations"-understand the function of diversity interventions.
