  • Effects of Socioeconomic Status and Health Care Access on Low Levels of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Among Spanish-Speaking Hispanics in California

Shingisai Chando, Jasmin A Tiro et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 27

Little is known about the effect of language preference, socioeconomic status, and health care access on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. We examined these factors in Hispanic parents of daughters aged 11 to 17 years in California (n = 1090). Spanish-speaking parents were less likely to have their daughters vaccinated than were English speakers (odds ratio [OR] = 0.55; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.31, 0.98). Adding income and access to…

  • Neighborhood social processes and academic achievement in elementary school

    Open Access•Ronya Emory, Margaret O''Brien Caughy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 37

To examine how neighborhood characteristics influence academic achievement, data were drawn from a community survey of low‐income neighborhoods and linked with data on performance on standardized testing for third‐grade students attending elementary schools in those communities. Results of multilevel logistic regressions indicated that probability of passing the reading portion of the test was associated with high neighborhood expectations for ed…

  • Therapists' Gender Assumptions and How These Assumptions Influence Therapy

T Robert Harris, Tal Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Feminist Family Therapy•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The purpose of this study is to investigate therapists' construction of gender through an examination of clinicians' attributions of expressiveness and instrumentality. Ninety-nine therapists participated in this study by watching a 25 minute videotaped vignette of a clinician interviewing a Caucasian female-male couple. Half of the participants viewed a female actor performing an expressive role with a male actor performing an instrumental role,…

  • Gender differences in alcohol consumption and adverse drinking consequences

    Open Access•Richard W Wilsnack, Nancy D Vogeltanz et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction•2000

Aims: To examine the consistency and/or variability of gender differences in drinking behavior crossculturally. Design, setting, participants: Women's and men's responses in 16 general population surveys from 10 countries, analyzed by members of the International Research Group on Gender and Alcohol. • Childhood sexual abuse and women's substance abuse

Sharon C Wilsnack, Nancy D Vogeltanz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Studies on Alcohol and…•1997

OBJECTIVE: Clinical studies have found elevated rates of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) in women seeking treatment for alcohol or drug abuse, and elevated rates of alcohol and drug disorders among female psychiatric patients with histories of CSA. The present study examines the relationship of CSA to women's use of alcohol and other drugs in a large, nationally representative sample of U.S. women. METHOD: As part of a national survey of women's dri…

  • Childhood sexual abuse and bulimic behavior in a nationally representative sample

Stephen A Wonderlich, Richard W Wilsnack et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1996•Cited by: 3•References: 25

OBJECTIVES. This study examines whether childhood sexual abuse is a significant risk factor for the development of bulimic behavior in women. METHODS. Interviews were conducted among a representative national sample of 1099 US women regarding their sexual experiences during childhood as well as their lifetime prevalence of bulimic behavior. Logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios to measure the contribution of childhood sex…

  • A Logit Analysis of the Likelihood of Leaving Rural Settings for Registered Nurses

Open Access•Shihua Pan, Jeri Dunkin et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•1995

This study examined the net effects of individual and community factors on the likelihood of registered nurses leaving current jobs using a logit analysis. Based on data from a survey of 2,509 rural nurses, four separate models were estimated and compared: one for nurses in rural settings as a whole and the other three for nurses in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and community/public health agencies. Results of the general model indicated…

  • Accountability and Centralization as Conceptual Tools for Understanding Community Power Structures

    T Robert Harris•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•1982•References: 16

The relationship between centralization of power and decision making in local communities is examined, beginning with Clark’s generalization that the direction of the relationship depends on the type of decision (separable or public). This generalization accounts well for his own data and for the findings of earlier research. Selected findings from a study of responses to de facto school segregation are reanalyzed. Most are consistent with the ce…
