Engaging Religion in a Contested Age: Contestations, Postmodernity, and Social Change
Both secular and religious contestations have threatened the character of contemporary civic discourse, signifying underlying issues needing to be addressed. Postmodern and globalization influences have contributed to their scope and intensity, adding underlying complexities to the presenting issues. Drawing upon case examples of a secular plant closure in a racially and ethnically diverse company town and strife threatening organizational viabil…
Women Empowering Women to Eliminate the Clergy Gender Gap
This exploratory study of 122 female Episcopal priests addresses the effectiveness of three types of grassroots mentoring and empowerment sessions in order to reduce women's underrepresentation in senor leadership positions. Two questionnaires administered prior to participation and about 2 months after the session(s) ended showed increased vocational clarity in discerning a call or not to senior leadership, greater confidence in ability to succe…
Why Are Women More Religious Than Men
Gender differences in religious behavior, beliefs, and roles have been widely researched over the last 50 years, resulting in an array of richly descriptive studies as well as additional research with inferential analyses. This volume's title, framed as a question, suggests a causal treatment of the topic, as does its objective as a social scientific attempt to explain why women are more religious than men. It seeks at the outset to establish sys…

Journeying Together: Three Voices on the Process of Making the Invisible Visible
Three women faculty from different disciplines assert the necessity of initiating a process to confront silence and create voice in order to address heterosexism and homophobia in the classroom. One advocates for the feminist construct of a consciously positional and political voice to improve students' sensitivity to multiculturalism in regard to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people (LGBT). Another proposes a process of locating sexu…

Feminization of the Clergy in America: Occupational and Organizational Perspectives
Spanning more than 70 years, Nesbitt's study of feminization concentrates on the Episcopal Church and the Unitarian Universalist Association, utilizing both statistical results and interviews to compare occupational patterns prior and subsequent to the large influx of women clergy. Among her findings, the author discovers that a decline in men's opportunities is evident before the 1970s, preceding the great influx of women over the last two decad…

Gender, Tokenism, and the Construction of Elite Clergy Careers
Clergy Feminization: Controlled Labor or Transformative Change
Studies of secular occupations have suggested that sharp influxes of women, producing a demographic feminization, result in negative occupational effects that serve to reduce rather than enhance women's opportunities and attainment. Occupational feminization of the clergy has become a likely prospect in many denominations, as increasing concentrations of ordained women interact with ongoing retirements that are mostly male. In this study, the car…
