Dark tourism in Timor‐Leste
During the brutal Indonesian occupation of Timor‐Leste from 1975 to 1999, over 100,000 Timorese out of an estimated population of 650,000 lost their lives; thousands more suffered a range of horrific human rights violations. This paper discusses ‘dark tourism’—tourism linked with this violent past—in Timor‐Leste's post‐independence era. The paper focuses its analysis of dark tourism on two of the most well‐known tourist sites linked with the Indo…

Since the nation's independence, families and communities have invested considerable time, effort and resources in fulfilling their obligations to the dead. These obligations are imbued with urgency because the dead are ascribed agency and can play a benevolent or malevol…
Victims versus Veterans
This article examines the politics of victims’ rights in Timor-Leste a decade after Timor’s official independence from Indonesia. Using data from work and ethnographic fieldwork in Timor from 2002 to 2013, the article asks why Timor’s victims’ rights movement has had such difficulties achieving its goals, and whether and in what ways Timor’s truth commission has contributed to these difficulties. It argues that Timor’s victims’ rights movement ha…
Democratization of Perpetration
This article examines the effects of human rights and transitional justice on memories of Timor-Leste's resistance to the Indonesian occupation, which lasted from 1975 to 1999. Data comes from ethnographic fieldwork in Timor, centered around remembrance of two major acts of resistance: an armed uprising in 1983 and a peaceful demonstration in 1991. The article argues that in Timor, an "apolitical" human rights has caused a post-conflict "democrat…
