  • The role of pointing gestures and eye gaze in second language vocabulary learning

    Open Access•Paula Janjić, Gozdem Arikan et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•2025•References: 68

Learning a second language is recognized as a necessity for social, political, and economic development. However, the processes contributing to initial vocabulary learning have not been explicated. In a series of experiments, this study examines the role of deictic gestures and gaze in second language vocabulary learning.Such cues have been shown to be fundamental in first language learning, but their efficacy in second language learning has not be…

  • Demonstratives in Spanish–Catalan simultaneous bilinguals: Which System Do They Prefer

    Open Access•Emanuela Todisco, Pedro Guijarro-Fuentes et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2025•References: 44

Demonstratives are cross-linguistically widespread deictic expressions. Demonstrative systems exhibit variation in number of terms, and parameters affecting their usage. The present paper assesses the relationship between spatial deixis and bilingualism: how language dominance affects speakers of two languages with different demonstrative systems. Here, we compare the use of demonstratives by 72 European Spanish-Catalan simultaneous bilinguals in…

  • Children’s use of demonstrative words: Spatial deictics beyond infancy

    Open Access•Pedro Guijarro-Fuentes, Harmen B Gudde et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2024

Demonstrative words are one of the most important ways of establishing reference in conversation. This work describes Spanish-speaking children’s demonstrative production between ages 2 to 10 using data from the CHILDES corpora. Results indicate that children feature all demonstratives in their lexicon – however, the distal term is scarce throughout development. Moreover, patterns of demonstrative use are not adult-like at age 10. We compare adul…

  • Author Correction: Spatial communication systems across languages reflect universal action constraints

  • Spatial communication systems across languages reflect universal action constraints

    Open Access•Kenny R Coventry, Harmen B Gudde et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 57

The extent to which languages share properties reflecting the non-linguistic constraints of the speakers who speak them is key to the debate regarding the relationship between language and cognition. A critical case is spatial communication, where it has been argued that semantic universals should exist, if anywhere. Here, using an experimental paradigm able to separate variation within a language from variation between languages, we tested the u…

  • Demonstratives as spatial deictics or something more? Evidence from Common Estonian and Võro

Maria Reile, Helen Plado et al.•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2020

There is debate regarding the extent to which egocentric distance versus a more interactional approach underpin the use of spatial demonstratives across languages. This study experimentally tested the influence of object distance from a speaker and two dynamic speech-situation related parameters – position of an interlocutor, and the one who placed the object referred to – on adnominal demonstrative pronoun choice in two very close kindred langua…
