Amuped: A database of American useful plants in Europe
Plant use in material culture and firewood practices: Linking ethnobotany and archaeology in traditional West African villages
Woody Plants in Dialan and other Ritual Practices within the Biocultural Landscape of Niokolo Koba National Park, Senegal
We examine the ritual use of woody species in seven villages near Niokolo Koba National Park in Senegal, focusing on tree-based rituals within the Dialan belief system. Local communities reported 41 species used in rituals, with Khaya senegalensis, Piliostigma thonningii, Daniellia oliveri, and Anogeissus leiocarpa being the most frequently mentioned. Among these, Khaya senegalensis, Ceiba pentandra, Adansonia digitata, and Ficus gnaphalocarpa ar…
Maximising biodiversity potential in Europe’s mines and quarries: A key role for EU Nature Restoration Regulation targets
Amid the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the EU’s Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR), which aims to restore degraded areas in the coming decades, post-mining sites must be integrated into biodiversity and ecosystem recovery strategies as key contributors. While mining, quarrying, and other extractive activities have considerable environmental impacts, they also present massive opportunities to create valuable habitats, support biodiversit…
Local Communities and Protected Areas: Plant Use and Sources Around Niokolo Koba, Senegal's Largest National Park
Biodiversity conservation approaches in Africa have often separated human societies from nature, establishing protected areas with restricted resource use and displacing local communities. However, successful conservation and management strategies demand the integration of social and environmental priorities. To this end, we examined the use of woody plants by rural communities around the Niokolo Koba National Park (Senegal). We quantitatively as…
A story of abandonment: Settlements and landscape in the Niokolo-Koba National Park, Senegal
The authors present a new, interdisciplinary project focusing on the interaction between people and the landscape within abandoned and populated villages following the founding of Niokola-Koba National Park in south-eastern Senegal. In this article, they assess anthropogenic transformations from geoarchaeological, ethnoarchaeological and ethnobotanical perspectives in order to document and preserve the heritage of both displaced and settled agric…
Greedy Transition-Based Dependency Parsing with Stack LSTMs
We introduce a greedy transition-based parser that learns to represent parser states using recurrent neural networks. Our primary innovation that enables us to do this efficiently is a new control structure for sequential neural networks—the stack long short-term memory unit (LSTM). Like the conventional stack data structures used in transition-based parsers, elements can be pushed to or popped from the top of the stack in constant time, but, in …
Going to the Roots of Dependency Parsing
Dependency trees used in syntactic parsing often include a root node representing a dummy word prefixed or suffixed to the sentence, a device that is generally considered a mere technical convenience and is tacitly assumed to have no impact on empirical results. We demonstrate that this assumption is false and that the accuracy of data-driven dependency parsers can in fact be sensitive to the existence and placement of the dummy root node. In par…
