Implementing Proactive Smoking Cessation Induction Interventions in a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic
Background: People with mental health and substance use disorders have a high prevalence of tobacco use. Community mental health clinics, including certified behavioral health clinics, are a key entry point where people with mental health and substance use disorders receive care. Implementation strategies to deliver tobacco use disorder treatment in community health clinics are needed. Two promising strategies supported by clinical practice guide…
Neurocognitive outcomes in adolescents with and without four weeks of cannabis abstinence
Brief cannabis abstinence may be associated with improvements in executive function among adolescents, supporting the idea of neurocognitive recovery, which has important implications for treatment, prevention, and public health policies
US state implementation of policies restricting sales of flavoured E-cigarettes
Implementing policies restricting the sale of flavoured e-cigarettes is complex and variable from state to state. Future implementation efforts and policy evaluations should take this variability into account
U.S. Cannabis Use Trends at the Intersection of Serious Psychological Distress and Race/Ethnicity, 2008–2019
Racial Differences in Nicotine Reduction
Introduction Tobacco regulatory policies are generally intended to apply to all segments of the population and to be equitable. Results from clinical trials on switching from commercial cigarettes to reduced nicotine cigarettes have included black populations but race-specific findings are not widely reported. Methods Data were pooled from two parallel randomized controlled trials of gradually reduced nicotine in cigarettes from 11.6 mg per cigar…
A randomized controlled trial of varenicline and brief behavioral counseling delivered by lay counselors for adolescent vaping cessation
This is the first study to evaluate varenicline in combination with a novel, brief, lay counselor delivered vaping cessation program for adolescents who vape nicotine. Results will inform clinicians on the effectiveness and acceptability of this promising, but not yet tested intervention. Clinical trial registration : ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT05367492
Development of cannabis use disorder in medical cannabis users
Frequency of cannabis use was not associated with improved pain, anxiety, or depression symptoms but was associated with new-onset cannabis use disorder in a significant minority of participants. Daily or near-daily cannabis use appears to have little benefit for these symptoms after 12 months of use
Performance Metrics of Substance Use Disorder Care Among Medicaid Enrollees in New York, New York

Improvement in the overall performance of SUD treatment in Medicaid potentially depends on general program improvements, not moving recipients among plans
Assessing Changes in Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety During Four Weeks of Cannabis Abstinence Among Adolescents
Background: Cannabis use is prevalent among adolescents, and many report using in attempts to alleviate negative mood and anxiety. Abstinence from substances such as alcohol and tobacco has been reported to improve symptoms of anxiety and depression. Few studies have examined the effect of cannabis abstinence on symptoms of anxiety and depression. Objective: To test the effect of 4 weeks of continuous cannabis abstinence on depressive and anxious…

Need for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Persons With Serious Mental Illness
Persons with serious mental illness (SMI) comprise a high-risk group for cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related mortality with rates at least twice those of the overall US. Potentially modifiable CVD risk behaviors (tobacco smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet) and risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia) are all markedly elevated in persons with SMI. Evaluations of programs implementing integrated medical care into spec…
Effect of Cigarette Rod Length on Smokers Switching to SPECTRUM Cigarettes
Objectives: Cigarettes vary in rod length but are generally thought of as a constant unit. In this study, we evaluated whether the rod length of participants' usual brand cigarettes affected their perceptions and smoking habits when switching to SPECTRUMs. Methods: Data were analyzed for 341 participants smoking their own brand cigarettes for one week and after switching to normal nicotine content (11.6 mg) SPECTRUMs for 2 weeks. Changes in perce…
