  • The Health Care Cost of Air Pollution

Panle Jia Barwick, Shanjun Li et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2026

This paper exploits the universe of credit- and debit-card transactions in China during 2013–2015 and provides the first nationwide analysis of the health care cost of PM2.5 for a developing country. We leverage spatial spillovers of PM2.5 from long-range transport to generate exogenous variation in local pollution, and we employ a flexible distributed lag model to capture semiparametrically the dynamic response of pollution exposure. We find sig…

  • Entry Deregulation, Market Turnover, and Efficiency

Panle Jia Barwick, Luming Chen et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

Although entry regulations are ubiquitous across countries, comprehensive evaluations on how such regulations affect firm dynamics and productivity are lacking. We examine a 2012-2014 pilot program in Guangdong (which later became a national policy) that was designed to reduce firm registration costs and encourage entrepreneurial activities. Using administrative data on firms' business registrations and annual reports, our analysis shows that the…

  • The impact of road rationing on housing demand and sorting

Open Access•Rhiannon Jerch, Panle Jia Barwick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Economics•2024•References: 37

Canonical urban models postulate transportation cost as a key element in determining urban spatial structure. This paper examines how road rationing policies impact the spatial distribution of households around transit centers using rich micro data on housing transactions and resident demographics in Beijing. We find that Beijing’s road rationing policy significantly increased the demand for housing near subway stations. The premium for proximity…

  • Industrial Policy

Open Access•Panle Jia Barwick, Myrto Kalouptsidi et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Industrial policy has been used throughout history in some form or other by most countries. Yet, it remains one of the most contentious issues among policy makers and economists alike. In part, this is because the empirical evidence on whether and how it should be implemented remains slim. Scant data on government subsidies, conflicting theoretical arguments, and the need to account for governments' short and long-run objectives, render research …

  • Commercial Casualties

Open Access•Jessica Chen Wei, Panle Jia Barwick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Studies•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 21

We explore whether international disputes harm commerce by galvanizing consumer boycotts of foreign products. Boycotts increase the social penalty of owning goods associated with a foreign adversary, offsetting individual incentives to free ride or discount the utility of participation. By harming international commerce, boycotts can help reveal information about resolve and avoid more costly forms of conflict. Using administrative data on the un…
