The Emergence of a New Lebanon
Dimensions of Interaction, 1948-1973
This study includes event summaries derived from The Conflict and Peace Data Bank (COPDAB) Project (see also CONFLICT AND PEACE DATA BANK (COPDAB), 1948-1978 [ICPSR 7767]). Part 1 contains yearly summaries of events directed by one international actor toward another. There are both conflict and cooperation summaries, including measures of the frequency and intensity of events, and a measure of the dimension of interaction, which combines frequenc…

Third world national security
This study is a preliminary attempt to reconceptualize the national security dimension of developing countries. Departing from the conventional monolithic approaches based on a military‐strategic orientation, the study places its emphasis on non‐military components of national security in the Third World countries such as economic vulnerability, ecological scarcity, ethnic fragmentation, and domestic coping machanisms which have been largely igno…
The structure of inequalities and protracted social conflict
This theoretical essay draws upom economic, sociological and political ideas in order to link structural inequality to “protracted social conflict.” The meaning, determinants, and consequences of structural inequalities are specified. The linkages between protracted social conflict and economic and political structures of a society are outlined. “Development,” is hypothesized as alleviating or intensifying protracted social conflict. The complex …
Contradictions and skepticism
This study reports the results of a survey conducted in January, 1980, at Cairo University where 131 seniors in political science expressed some salient attitudes towards the peace process. Israel was perceived by about one‐fourth of the sample as an enemy who is not taking serious positive steps to resolve the Arab‐Israeli conflict, especially the issue of Palestinian autonomy. Yet, almost as many respondents indicated a desire to visit Israel a…
The use of semantic dimensions in the scaling of international events
The following study is one consequence of an on‐going attempt by the authors to achieve a more comprehensive understanding and expression of data relating to international events. This paper reports on the collection of semantic differential scores for 250 different types of nation‐state behaviors and then demonstrates how those ratings were used to reconstruct the domestic and international scales in COPDAB so that the scale point categories wer…
From War to Peace
Security, normalized interactions, acceptance of Israel in the region, the right of Palestinian self determination, and the role of Egypt and Israel in the newly emerging Middle East setting were topics of discussion at a historical meeting which took place in May 1979, in Cairo. About a dozen intellectuals from Israel and Egypt met to discuss these and related issues. We, the authors of this article were invited to participate as third-party fac…
The Conflict and Peace Data Bank (Copdab) Project
As students of politics and political science, we should and we do care about the events which lead to war, instability, and international tension as well as about events which lead to equitable interdependence, integration, peace, improvement of quality of life, reduction of colonialism, and so on. Because we care about these matters, we try to advance procedures and theories about systematizing our observations and improving our skills of analy…
Demographic change and political change
In this article, the authors delineate the parameters of an emergent and critical demographic challenge to the regional stability of the Middle East. The dimensions of the demographic problems posed by the Arab population growth in occupied territories must be taken into account in settlement planning
Major world conflicts and interventions, 1945 to 1975
A list of 641 major conflict events was used to generate a list of 265 major conflicts. Using conflict‐years as a measure of conflict, most of our findings were generally consistent with those of other authors, such as major conflicts were increasing from 1945 to 1970, as were external interventions, and most major conflicts were happening in the Third World. However, we found a significant decrease in both conflicts and interventions from 1971 t…

Major world cooperation events, 1945 to 1975
Using event‐interaction data from Azar's Conflict and Peace Data Bank, the authors examine the distributions of major world cooperations and major international interventions by regions of cooperation, types of cooperation, and times of cooperation. Also examined are the distributions of major intervening parties by regions of intervening parties and intervening by intervened regions. In terms of location, it was found that the developed regions …

A System for Forecasting Strategic Crises
This article presents a system for forecasting increasing tension and war in the Middle East and illustrates to those studying crisis‐prone regions of the world an early warning system for predicting international tension. In the first part of the article are discussed the theory, methodology, and results obtained in testing the system, while the appendices present the more technical aspects. In the conclusion of this article it is held that cris…
Discontinuities in the symbolic environment
In this article some problems of scaling events data are re‐examined with a focus on apparent discontinuities, particularly at the cooperation end of the scales. The authors offer some possible interpretations of the “gaps” in both the international and domestic scales, and conclude with a discussion of three strategies (paradigms) for conceptualizing a theory of cooperation

Conflict escalation and conflict reduction in an international crisis
Conflict research has already advanced some very useful conceptual and empirical discoveries concerning the structure and process of international conflict escalation. Some of the more basic findings suggest that when two parties involve themselves in a conflict situation, they tend to escalate the intensity, scope, and frequency of their negative signals; they tend to make more visible or even possibly compound their areas of incompatibility; th…
