  • No Time to Die , the Bond Franchise and Global Hollywood

Open Access•Andrew Higson, Miya Treadwell•ARTICLE•Journal of British Cinema and…•2023

No Time to Die ( NTTD), the 25th entry in the Bond franchise, became central to the plight of theatrical film exhibition during the Covid-19 pandemic. Produced as one of MGM’s and the wider industry’s biggest commodities, a tent-pole film, it was due to be released in April 2020. One of the first big film casualties of the global lockdowns, NTTD endured several delays before finally reaching cinemas in September 2021. The Bond franchise and the d…

Nostalgia is not a singular phenomenon; it is multi-layered, diversely experienced and variously exploited, as I demonstrate by briefly outlining the history of nostalgia, especially the recent shift from modern to post-modern versions of the experience. The modern, temporal version of nostalgia is founded on the unattainable distance between the past and the present; the post-modern, atemporal version erases this sense of distance. Central to th…

  • Film England

    Andrew Higson•EDITOR•BOOK•Film England•2011

In a film business increasingly transnational in its production arrangements and global in its scope, what space is there for culturally English filmmaking? In this groundbreaking book, Andrew Higson demonstrates how a variety of Englishnesses have appeared on screen since 1990, and surveys the genres and production modes that have captured those representations. He looks at the industrial circumstances of the film business in the UK, government …
