Turhon A. Murad
Dr. Turhon A. Murad was the first tenure-track biological anthropologist hired at California State University, Chico (Chico State). He founded the Human Identification Laboratory in 1974, became the 42nd Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology in 1989, started the Chico State Certificate in Forensic Identification in 1995, and was active in forensic casework for 40 years. Turhon had a long, successful career as a professor and fo…
Using Stable Nitrogen Isotope Ratios from Human Skeletal Muscle Tissue for Postmortem Interval (PMI) Estimation (Part 1)
Human skeletal muscle tissue was analyzed for stable nitrogen isotope analysis (δ15N) to test the applicability of changes in values (Δ15N) through the putrefaction process for postmortem interval (PMI) estimation. Seasonal differences in Δ15N values of decom-posing skeletal muscle tissue were analyzed from 20 human donors at the University of Tennessee Anthropology Research Facility. This study revealed that change in the δ15N ratios of decompos…
Using Stable Nitrogen Isotope Ratios from Human Skeletal Muscle Tissue for Postmortem Interval (PMI) Estimation (Part 2)
Fly larvae were analyzed for stable nitrogen isotope analysis (δ15N) to test if values can be used to predict season of death/decomposition as a first step in developing a robust quantitative method for postmortem interval (PMI) estimation. This is the first study to analyze δ15N values from blow flies (BF) (Ditera, Calliphoridae: Lucilia coeruleiviridis, Calliphora vicina, Calliphora vomitoria, Chrysoma rufifaces) and black soldier flies (BSF) (…
Preservation of bone organic fraction is not predictive of the preservation of bone inorganic fraction when assessing stable isotope analysis sample quality control measures

Stable isotope evidence of diet breadth expansion and regional dietary variation among Middle-to-Late Holocene Hunter-Gatherers of Central California
Using bone bioapatite yield for quality control in stable isotope analysis applications
Comparison of transmission FTIR, ATR, and DRIFT spectra: Implications for assessment of bone bioapatite diagenesis
Application of Stable Isotope Forensics for Predicting Region of Origin of Human Remains From Past Wars and Conflicts
The application of stable isotope analysis has provided novel approaches for provenancing unidentified human remains from forensic contexts. Stable isotope ratios measured in human tissues provide a record of the foods consumed during life as well as the geographic location where drinking water or food was obtained. This study begins with an overview of the application of stable isotope analysis for provenancing human remains, followed by three c…
Paleodietary analysis of a San Francisco Bay Area shellmound: Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis of late Holocene humans from the Ellis Landing site (CA-CCO-295)
Comparison of transmission FTIR, ATR, and DRIFT spectra: Implications for assessment of bone bioapatite diagenesis
