  • Genetics of monozygotic twins reveals the impact of environmental sensitivity on psychiatric and neurodevelopmental phenotypes

    Open Access•Elham Assary, Jonathan R I Coleman et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2025•References: 48

Individual sensitivity to environmental exposures may be genetically influenced. This genotype-by-environment interplay implies differences in phenotypic variance across genotypes, but these variants have proven challenging to detect. Genome-wide association studies of monozygotic twin differences are conducted through family-based variance analyses, which are more robust to the systemic biases that impact population-based methods. We combined da…

  • Genetic and Environmental Contributions to Sleep Quality and Low Back Pain: A Population-Based Twin Study

    Marina B Pinheiro, José J Morosoli et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2018

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to estimate the extent to which the co-occurrence of poor sleep quality and low back pain is due to the same genetic and/or environmental risk factors or due to a causal association. METHODS: Cross-sectional data on sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality index) and low back pain were collected in a population-based sample of adult twins (N = 2134) registered with the Murcia Twin Registry. Bivariate analysis an…

  • Altruistic Behavior among Twins: Willingness to Fight and Self-Sacrifice for Their Closest Relatives

    Open Access•Encarnación Tornero, Juan F Sánchez-Romera et al.•ARTICLE•Human Nature•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 55

  • Sharing genes fosters identity fusion and altruism

A Vázquez, Antonio Gomez et al.•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2017

Researchers have shown that the more genes twins share, the more they care about one another. Here, we examine a psychological mediator of such genetic influences, “identity fusion” (a visceral sense of oneness with them). Results supported this hypothesis. Relative to dizygotic twins, monozygotic twins reported stronger fusion and elevated desire to have contact and share experiences with their twin (Study 1), to forgive and grant favors to thei…
