The building of the high-speed rail track linking the Rhine to the Rhone led to the discovery of two Bell Beaker burials in an Iron Age cemetery located in the plain to the east of Dijon. The Tilles plain is an alluvial environment, shaped by the valleys of the Tille and the Ouche and populated since Late Prehistory, particularly during the Bell Beaker and Early Bronze periods, which have yielded settlements located on the rivers. These burials a…

  • New insights on the first Neolithic societies in the Horn of Africa

Xavier Gutherz, Joséphine Lesur et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The site of Wakrita is a small Neolithic establishment located on a wadi in the tectonic depression of Gobaad in Djibouti in the Horn of Africa. The 2005 excavations yielded abundant ceramics that enabled us to define one Neolithic cultural facies of this region, which was also identified at the nearby site of Asa Koma. The faunal remains confirm the importance of fishing in Neolithic settlements close to Lake Abbé, but also the importance of bov…

  • The Alteration of Neolithic Wood Charcoal from the Salt Spring of Poiana Slatinei in Lunca (Neamt, Romania)

Open Access•Alexa Dufraisse, Dominique Sordoillet et al.•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2010

Located in immediate proximity to a salt spring still in use, the site of Poiana Slatinei in Lunca (Neamt, Romania) has yielded the earliest evidence of salt production in Europe (6050-5500 B.C.). It contains several dozen combustion features that form a large stratified mound of ashes, charcoal and rubified sediment layers. In 2004, a vast sondage allowed detailed stratigraphic analysis and recording of the Early Neolithic levels and the collect…

  • Fuel and vegetation at Asa Koma (Republic of Djibouti) during the second millennium BC

    C Newton, Stéphanie Thiébault et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Charcoal analyses were performed on hearths and ash layers from a seasonally occupied Neolithic dwelling site in the eastern lowlands of the Horn of Africa, dated to the first half of the second millennium BC. It was suggested by an earlier study that the predominance of two taxa, Suaeda (seablite)/Chenopodiaceae and Salvadora persica (saltbush), could be an over-representation due to the selection of wood for specialized use, i.e. fish processin…

The Gardon cave, located in the south of the Jura, has been excavated over more than fifteen years. The aim of such a long excavation was to draw up a new point of reference both on a chronological and cultural level for the Upper Rhone Basin. Its stratigraphy, which shows occupation layers and flood levels due to karstic movements, made it possible to confirm the palaeoenvironnemental variations established in the Jura by Michel Magny on the bas…
