Secularization and the Influence of Religion on Beliefs about Premarital Sex
Over the past two or three decades there has been a substantial decline in support for traditional beliefs about premarital sex. From theories about religious privatization and religious plausibility structures it was predicted the decline was slower among conservative Protestants who attended church often than among any other group of Christians. The prediction was tested using data from the 1972–93 Cumulative Social Surveys. The findings indica…
Institutionalization and Well-Being Among the Elderly
Iatrogenic, prosthetic, and other perspectives are used to derive hypotheses concerning the roles of perceived health and residence satisfaction in mediating the effects of nursing home institutionalization on subjective well-being. The findings show that perceived health and residence satisfaction are important intervening variables. Institutionalization has a positive effect on well-being, mediated by perceived health, but institutionalization …
A Comparison of Racial Attitudes
A number of studies have focused on public perceptions of police and have concluded that black citizens have lower evaluations of police than their white counterparts. A review of the recent literature reveals that few studies have compared black and white respondents on attitudes toward strike activity among police despite the growing militancy of public employees. In this paper, the significant relationship uncovered between race and attitudes …
Attitudinal Militancy Among Teachers
Recent research on teacher militancy report associations between various personal background and organizational variables and attitudinal militancy. These relationships are frequently interpreted by the post hoc application of social psychological concepts. A causal model is developed that incorporates relevant personal and organizational variables and the social psychological variables that presumably mediate the relationship between these and a…
Reactions to Three Types of Distributive Injustice
Recent formulations of distributive justice or equity theory are examined. It is suggested that the basic differences, and indeed difficulties, of these formulations lie in the manner in which social comparisons have been conceptualized. It is proposed that as a result of these conceptual problems, existing formulations account for only a small number of the many possible types of injustice situations. A conceptual elaboration of distributive jus…
Effect of resource class on retaliation to injustice in interpersonal exchange
Love Poverty in Modern Culture and Sensitivity Training
The social institutions of modern technological culture often fail to provide adequate opportunity for the exchange of emotions and personal feelings of affect and esteem. The widespread development of alternative institutions such as sensitivity training can be seen as an attempt to compensate for the scarcity of this type of interpersonal communication. Reasons for this scarcity are examined in terms of a structural model of individual and soci…
