  • A kaleidoscope from a lost world: Mesolithic harpoon morphology in Eastern Middle Sweden

    Open Access•Fredrik Lundström, Norman Macleod et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2026•References: 58

Modern geometric techniques offer significant potential to uncover the worlds in which weapons were created, worlds shaped by specific environmental conditions and knowledge systems transmitted through established networks. We analysed the morphology of Mesolithic harpoon points from Eastern Middle Sweden to explore developments in craft and hunting techniques across the circum-Baltic Sea area, and to investigate if specific morphological traits …

  • Depositional patterns at Åloppe, norrskog- an attempt to contextualize taphonomy on a 20th century excavation

    Open Access•Sara Gummesson•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•References: 13

Spatial distribution of unburned mammal remains revealed depositional patterns at a PWC-site. • Contextualized taphonomic analysis suggest different handling of species in different areas of the site and point to human ideas and structured behavior. • Taphonomic observations and spatial distribution suggest an intentional handling and deposition of human remains within a restricted area of the site. The Pitted Ware Culture site Åloppe, Norrskog i…

  • The Spatial Organization of Bone Crafting During the Middle and Late Mesolithic at Ringsjöholm and Strandvägen in Sweden

Open Access•Sara Gummesson, Fredrik Molin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2019•References: 20

This paper focuses on the spatial distribution of bone tool production waste from two Mesolithic sites in Sweden, Ringsjöholm and Strandvägen, with well-preserved faunal remains including bone and antler artifacts. Local production on both sites has generated a variety of identifiable waste products deriving from complete chains of production, including unmodified bones, debitage and finished products. Identified categories include: blanks, remov…

  • Lithic Raw Material Economy in the Mesolithic: An Experimental Test of Edged Tool Efficiency and Durability in Bone Tool Production

Sara Gummesson, Rolf Sundberg et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 12

The foundation of this paper is lithic economy with a focus on the actual use of different lithic raw materials for tasks at hand. Our specific focus is on the production of bone tools during the Mesolithic. The lithic and osseous assemblages from Strandvägen, Motala, in east-central Sweden provide the archaeological background for the study. Based on a series of experiments we evaluate the efficiency and durability of different tool edges of fiv…
